Irvine Remembers Former Mayor & City Councilmember Bill Vardoulis
Former City of Irvine Mayor and Councilmember Bill Vardoulis, who dedicated much of his life to public service in Irvine and Orange County, passed away September 1, 2021.
Bill was first elected to the Irvine City Council in 1976. He served as Mayor from 1977 to 1979, and continued to serve as a Councilmember until 1984. He was elected again in 1990 and served for two years. In addition, he served as a member of the Irvine Transportation Commission.
Bill is credited with promoting the visionary plan for toll roads in Orange County, and he was known for seeking ways to improve transportation infrastructure in Orange and Riverside counties. We are grateful for Bill's leadership and dedication to our City and the region.

Fact for 50 Years of Incorporation
Moooove over plants! Before lima beans and Valencia oranges took root on the Irvine Ranch, it was cattle that ruled the land. Thanks to the Irvine Historical Society, we know that the cattle operations were located next to what is now the San Joaquin golf course. By the 1960s as many as 4,000 cattle were present on the land, making the Irvine Ranch the largest cattle ranch in Orange County.
