50th Anniversary

Fun Facts for 50 Years of Incorporation!

Michelson

Michelson Drive in Irvine was named after Dr. Albert Michelson (left, front), who won the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1907 after accurately determining the speed of light. After leasing land from James Irvine, Michelson built a mile-long airtight tube on the Irvine Ranch in 1929 to experiment with the speed of light. For many years, Michelson Drive had the lowest speed limit of any street in Irvine at 35 miles per hour.
