Welcome to the Library Reading Corner for October 2024
A Note from City Librarian Elizabeth Saucedo:
In writing this month’s greeting to our dear library community, I am borrowing a line from the classic children’s story Anne of Green Gables: “I'm so glad I live in a world where there are Octobers.”
As days get shorter and temperatures begin to drop, we invite you into the library to browse our shelves for your next movie marathon, attend a craft program to create festive pumpkin-themed décor, meet real-life Storm Troopers, and sign up for the In-N-Out Cover to Cover Reading Program to earn delicious rewards. Remember to check out the e-Library, too, for everything from seasonal cookbooks to scary stories, and perhaps dance to the Monster Mash for a bit of nostalgia, too. There is so much to explore at your library, and our goal is to keep you well-informed of all our offerings.

Solvang Library and the Santa Ynez Valley Natural History Society are excited to present eminent scientist Dr. Douglas Long to speak about native California species: California has the highest biodiversity of any state in the nation, but also has the most species at risk, and many are now extinct. The lecture can be attended either in-person at Solvang Library, or via Zoom. Those wishing to attend via Zoom should register at the Society’s website at www.syvnature.org. The lecture will be followed by a question and answer period.

More recently, Douglas left his post as Curator of Natural History at the Museum of Riverside to join his wife and director of the UC Sedgwick Reserve, Dr. Heather Constable.

Saturday October 26, 3:30 - 5:00pm
The October read is Demon Copperhead, Barbara Kingsolver's Pulitzer prize winning novel.
"A kid is a terrible thing to be, in charge of nothing." So says young Damon Fields, who's destined to be known as Demon Copperhead, a hungry orphan in a snake-harboring holler in Lee County, Virginia. Kingsolver's capacious, ingenious, wrenching, and funny survivor's tale is a virtuoso present-day variation on Charles Dickens' David Copperfield, and she revels in creating wicked and sensitive character variations, dramatic trials-by-fire, and resounding social critiques, all told from Damon's frank and piercing point of view in vibrantly inventive language. - Booklist reviews
Print copies are available at Solvang Library; E and Audio downloads are available via the library catalog.
All readers are welcome at the Magpie Club discussions.
