Welcome to the Library Reading Corner for August 2024
A Note from City Librarian Elizabeth Saucedo:
Hello, library patrons! We hope that your summer has been filled to the brim with all the sunshine and joy that our beautiful area has to offer. At your neighborhood libraries in the Goleta and Santa Ynez Valleys, our Summer Reading Program welcomed in familiar faces as well as new visitors and saw registration from almost 1,700 children and teens throughout June and July. Making this year’s program extra special was the record-breaking support from over 80 dedicated teen and adult volunteers, whose time and efforts are wholeheartedly applauded. With their help, our program is able to reach its primary goal of promoting literacy in the community, as time spent reading during the summer months helps reduce the effects of “summer slide” and sets students up for success in the new school year. The benefits extend to readers of all ages, too, as reading or listening to books helps improve our quality of life by strengthening memory, reducing stress, expanding knowledge, and building empathy.
As we look toward the month ahead, you may notice a lighter schedule of programs as our library staff take time to plan our next slate of enriching offerings for the fall and spring. Our collections team will also be focusing on adding new materials to the library shelves at all our branches, so be sure to check back often in-person or through the library catalog for your next great read.

In the spirit of lifelong learning, celebrate the back-to-school season with self-paced educational and research resources available for free through the library website, or stop by the service desk to ask our knowledgeable staff for help finding information. We look forward to seeing you at the library this August!

400 Stuffies Take Over Goleta Valley Library
The 2024 Summer Reading Program, Adventure Begins at Your Library, came to a close on Saturday, July 27th at the Goleta & Santa Ynez Valley Libraries after seven fun-filled weeks of programs, performances, and lots of great books. The program could not happen without the help of our amazing volunteers. This year’s team included 80 teen and adult volunteers, more than any other year. Since the program’s launch in mid-June, more than 1,500 children in grades K-6 and over 160 teens in grades 7-12 signed up and received reading logs, and adults read over 700 books for a chance to be entered into weekly drawings.
The much-anticipated Stuffed Animal Sleepover returned to Goleta Valley Library for a summer campout themed overnight adventure! A record-breaking 400 stuffies were dropped off by enthusiastic kids.
Congratulations on all your amazing reading and thank you for spending the summer with us!
