Welcome to the Library Reading Corner for July 2024
A Note from City Librarian Elizabeth Saucedo:
Hello, library patrons, and welcome to the July edition of the Reading Corner newsletter! The staff at the Goleta & Santa Ynez Valley Libraries hope that your summer has been enjoyable so far and that you have found ways to incorporate reading into your everyday routine.
For inspiration, the New Book shelves at our libraries are well-stocked with great reads for fans of every genre, from lighthearted romance to thrilling suspense to compelling graphic novels for all ages. With the 2024 Summer Reading Program in full swing, I’ve been reflecting on how its theme – Adventure Begins at Your Library! – represents both the wealth of experiences available for patrons to enjoy here as well as the invaluable, lifelong impacts that library services have in our community.
Our dedicated library staff look forward to this peak period of activity every year, when we welcome over 25,000 monthly visits across all our branches and have the joy of helping you find treasure in all its forms, whether it’s checking out a sparkly unicorn board book to read to your little ones at bedtime, catching up on current events with the New York Times over your morning coffee, or making a new friend at one of our free craft programs on a sunny summer afternoon.

Now - Saturday July 27 The 2024 Summer Reading Program launched on Saturday, June 15 with over 1,600 systemwide visits during opening weekend alone! The program will run through Saturday, July 27 and the month ahead is action-packed with treasure hunts, marionettes shows, Independence Day crafts, and the Stuffed Animal Sleepover taking place at different library locations. Check the online events calendar for more details on what’s happening at your local branch! Youth and Teens can sign up for the reading program anytime before July 27 to receive their reading logs and earn prizes based on how many books or minutes they log during the program. These prizes have been generously donated by local businesses and organizations to support literacy in the community by encouraging participants to reach and exceed their reading goals. Adults can also participate by completing a ticket for each book they read, which enters them into weekly prize drawings – no registration needed! We look forward to seeing you at the library this summer.
The program will run at Goleta Valley Library, Buellton Library, Solvang Library, and the Bookvan.
