Join Us for the May 7 City Council Meeting
Topics Include: Edison Scholar, Girsh Park 25th Anniversary, Municipal Clerks Week, Potter’s Point, Electric Vehicle Reach Code, 100% Renewable Energy, and Neighborhood Services and Public Works Annual Work Programs
We hope you will join us for the Goleta City Council meeting this Tuesday, May 7, at 5:30 p.m. (closed session begins at 4:00 p.m.). We encourage you to come in-person to City Council Chambers, watch live, and/or participate via Zoom. Directions for how to do so can be found below. Items on the agenda include:
- The City Council will give a Certificate of Recognition to Anelle Priebe-Garcia, Southern California Edison’s 2024 Edison Scholar. See the certificate here: https://tinyurl.com/3sv5f5h3.
- The City Council will proclaim May 5 – 11 as the 55th Annual Professional Municipal Clerks Week. The City is lucky to have an amazing City Clerk team made up of four hard-working and dedicated individuals. Read the proclamation here: https://tinyurl.com/4mz3d5zd.
- The Council will discuss approving the Standing Naming Committee’s recommendation to name Potter’s Point at Ellwood Mesa/Sperling Preserve. Santa Barbara County Supervisor Laura Capps submitted an application to the City to name a specific location at Ellwood Mesa "Potter's Point" after the late local artist, Christopher Potter. The Standing Naming Committee, made up of two Councilmembers and two members of the public, unanimously approved making the recommendation to Council. The staff report can be found here: https://tinyurl.com/5n89nhab.
- The City Council will consider an ordinance amending chapter 15.12 of the Goleta Municipal Code to adopt an Electric Vehicle Reach. To meet the growing need for access to Electric Vehicle (EV) chargers, local jurisdictions often adopt “Reach Codes," which reach beyond the minimum requirements of the state. The Reach Code ordinance would increase the number of EV charging spaces and/or EV charging infrastructure required in new development. In the ordinance, the City is proposing that new multifamily buildings, hotels and motels, residential homes, and nonresidential development such as workplaces, are required to install a specific amount of EV chargers and/or EV charger infrastructure. - The Council will consider opting up the City’s municipal electric utility accounts to 100% renewable electricity with Central Coast Community Energy (3CE). The City of Goleta has a goal to reach 100% renewable energy by 2030 and an interim goal to power municipal facilities with 50% renewable electricity by 2025. In August 2019, Goleta joined a Community Choice Energy organization, 3CE, to help meet those goals. 3CE offers two rate options: 3C Choice at 35.8% renewable content (2022 Power Content) and 3C Prime, which provides 100% renewable content at a premium added cost of $0.008/kilowatt hour.In advance of 2030, cities in 3CE have the opportunity to “opt up” to 100% renewable energy at any time through 3C Prime to purchase up to 100% renewable, clean electricity - procured from non-polluting, clean and renewable sources with an approximate 50/50 split using solar and wind. The staff report can be read here: https://tinyurl.com/4694n765.
- The City Council will discuss work priorities and adopt the Annual Work Program for Fiscal Year 2024/25 for the Neighborhood Services Department. The purpose of this workshop is to update the Council on existing work commitments and to provide the Council with an opportunity to discuss work priorities for the Neighborhood Services Department for the upcoming fiscal year, as well as propose and consider ideas for new work projects. The Work Plan also summarizes work and accomplishments for the past fiscal year and lays the groundwork for the Department budget. - The Council will also discuss work priorities and adopt the Annual Work Program for Fiscal Year 2024/25 for the Public Works Department. The Annual Work Program provides a regular, structured mechanism to allow the Council to review and discuss the work commitments and staffing resources of the Public Works Department, as well as consider new projects. It also lays the groundwork for the Department budget. The staff report, Annual Work Program, and presentation are available at https://tinyurl.com/59u4nj23.
