Welcome to the Library Reading Corner for October 2022
A Note from Library Director Allison Gray:
Welcome to an action packed October edition of the Library Reading Corner. There are so many great things happening at our Libraries it is hard to know where to start. I encourage you to take time out to read through all of the fun ways to get involved with your library this month.
I also want to take this opportunity to highlight two of my absolute favorite free access databases that we have been able to offer thanks in large part to the efforts of the State Library of California. You can access them at www.goletavalleylibrary.org.
First, there is Linked In Learning, formerly known as Lynda.com. Linked In Learning focuses on three major topics and is available in a number of languages. The first subject is Business. Some of the class topics to be found in the Business section focus on things such as Business Software, Finance and Accounting, Marketing, Small Business and Entrepreneurship, and much more.
The second main focus is on Creative endeavors such as: Graphic Design, AEC, Audio and Music, Motion Graphics and VFX, User Experience, Web Design and many more related topics.
Finally, there is Technology: Cloud Computing, Network and System Administration, IT Help Desk, Database Management, Software Development, Website Development, and many others.
Linked In Learning offers certificates from some of the major companies out there.
Another favorite database of mine is called Skillshare. Again, it is a class-based program. When you sign up, it looks as though you only get the first 3 months free; however, after your first three months you simply re-register and library patrons continue getting free classes. I am learning all about how to start my own podcast. There are loads of classes on finding the best equipment, setting up the perfect space, finding the best software for me, how to go about building the content, and so on. There are categories concerning the arts, computers, music, and all sorts of other interesting classes.
Of course, we have many wonderful books on many of these topics as well, if you are more of a physical learner. I know I tend to remember things better if I read them on a physical page versus a screen. Isn’t it wonderful that we can offer so many options to our jurisdictions?
Speaking of jurisdictions, as a gentle reminder to our patrons, please remember that Santa Barbara items must now be returned to Santa Barbara Libraries (Santa Barbara, Eastside, and Montecito). The Santa Barbara Library System left the Black Gold Cooperative Library System effective July 2022 and there is no longer regular shipment between the two branches. This means that you should return their materials to their library and anything you check out from Goleta cannot be returned to Santa Barbara. Thank you so much for your help in this matter!

A gentle reminder to all of the users of the Zip Book Program: please remember to return the items you received from Amazon to your library when you have finished using them. We would so appreciate it if you let the staff member at the desk know that you are giving her or him Zip Books. We are able to provide this service through a grant program which requires a lot of recordkeeping. We are so happy that you have taken advantage of the program and hope to offer it again this fall!
Some of you may know “Miss Nicole” from her Wiggly Wednesday class at Goleta Valley Library. Nicole has been providing lively community-beloved storytimes for many years that feature books, music, dancing, puppets, and bubble parties! Her fun weekly programs are perfect for toddlers and preschoolers who are discovering the magic of stories and songs.
The zest is yet to come for our new library patrons! We want to congratulate the over 100 community members that were able to sign-up and take home a brand new library card on-site at the Goleta Lemon Festival this September 24th and 25th. Apart from taking home their new card, visitors were also able to spin our prize wheel, grab free library trinkets, and participate in our origami flower craft. Thank you to everyone that stopped by!
