OCTOBER 2021 LIBRARY READING CORNER

A Note from Library Director Allison Gray:

Welcome to the October edition of the Library Reading Corner. There is so much going on at the Goleta and Santa Ynez Valley Libraries this month. Read on to see what's happening, including about our new Bookvan for the Isla Vista Community and the last day of Sidewalk Service at all three library branches.

I also want to make sure you know about all of the amazing downloadable content available from the library. If you can’t get to the library in-person, but want to access e-content from your home or anywhere else, we make it easy and convenient for you. Visit our E-books, Audiobooks & Downloadables webpage to find a handful of sites that will allow you to access all kinds of content, including:

  • ProQuest eBook Central: Includes content from scholarly sources such as University Presses, interesting tutorial videos by Ancestry.com on best practices when doing genealogy research, access to MEDLINE (produced by the US National Library of Medicine), and much more.
  • Overdrive/RBDigital Magazines/Libby: Overdrive houses the library’s largest collection of e-books and e-audiobooks. They recently purchased RBDigital Magazines and added thousands of magazine titles to the collection. Libby is an app that makes borrowing items from Overdrive extremely easy on your mobile device. There are well over a million titles in Overdrive that Black Gold libraries have collectively made available to our patrons.
  • Hoopla: Hoopla is a pay-per-play resource that features movies, television shows, music, e-audiobooks, e-books and graphic novels. Patrons can have up to 5 downloads per month. The great thing about Hoopla is that if you see it “on the shelf”, you can check it out without having to put it on hold.
  • Enki Library: Enki features content from smaller publishing houses including children’s materials, comics, graphic novels, travel books, study aids, and new e-books for adults. Local authors can publish their e-books on the site and even get help designing the cover and interior!
  • Kanopy: Kanopy is a pay-per-play site featuring streaming videos. They have phenomenal children’s content, documentaries, and foreign films in particular. Downloads are limited to 5 per month.

There is so much more great content on our website, check it out at www.GoletaValleyLibrary.org.

New Goleta Valley Library Bookvan Rolls Into Isla Vista

Library service is now rolling in Isla Vista. A ribbon-cutting was held on October 4, 2021, at the Isla Vista Community Center to unveil the new Goleta Valley Library Bookvan and kick off the first day of service. Local dignitaries, Isla Vista stakeholders and community members turned out to see the new custom solar powered van in person and cheer as the blue ribbon was cut marking the beginning of on-the-go library programming in Isla Vista. Watch a video recap of the event here and just the ribbon cutting here. View the Bookvan's repeating two-week schedule on our website at www.cityofgoleta.org/city-hall/goleta-valley-library/information/bookvan

Brought to you by Aspen Discovery, the Goleta and Santa Ynez Valley Libraries new online catalog has many features that make searching, browsing, and borrowing easier than ever. One of the biggest improvements is that the library’s entire collection is now conveniently available in one place, including all physical items such as books and DVDs, as well as digital titles such as eBooks and downloadable movies. Another exciting feature is that digital titles can now be borrowed directly through the catalog with the simple press of a button, so patrons no longer need to log into a separate site to manage their monthly digital borrows.
