JULY 2021 LIBRARY READING CORNER
A Note from Library Director Allison Gray:
It's been great having our doors open for limited in-person service! We have so enjoyed seeing our patrons again and watching people browse our stacks for the best reads and audiovisual material. In-person service has worked out so well that we are expanding our days and hours for Express Service and Sidewalk Service; please read below for more details. As we slowly return to normal, we hope to see more and more of you at our libraries.
Do you love the library? Then I encourage you to apply for the Library Advisory Commission or the Santa Barbara County Library Advisory Committee. Applications are due by July 23, and information on both can be found in this newsletter.
We continue to offer virtual programs, including our Summer Reading Program happening now! This newsletter highlights some of our many upcoming virtual programs that we hope you can join us for.
I'm also excited to share that coming soon we will have a brand new Goleta and Santa Ynez Valley Libraries catalog site from Aspen! The new site will make everything so much easier for our users. I think patrons are going to love this new catalog search site, it searches not only the Black Gold catalog but our Staff Picks bibliographies, programs we’re holding, and more. We are hoping to debut it sometime this month - stay tuned for more details.

Apply for a Library Commission or Committee!
The City of Goleta is looking for community members to #JoinTeamGoleta by serving on one of our Commissions or Committees. There are a number of openings, including two vacancies on the Library Advisory Commission and one vacancy on the Santa Barbara County Library Advisory Committee. The positions are compensated at the rate of $50 per meeting. Applications are available here and are due by July 23, 2021, or until filled.
If you are interested in learning how libraries work and helping guide services in the greater Goleta Valley area, then you may be interested in applying for the Library Advisory Commission. This Commission meets the first Monday of each month at 6:00 p.m. There are two vacancies, one member of the incorporated service area of the City of Goleta Valley and one member suggested by the Board of Supervisors and residents of the unincorporated service area of the Goleta Valley. The role of this Commission is to increase citizen participation in library issues by analyzing the library's needs, considering goals, anticipating future needs and problems, acting as a liaison, and helping to develop consensus for advisement to the Goleta Library Board of Trustees.
The City is also looking for a member to serve on the Santa Barbara County Library Advisory Committee. This Committee’s role is to advise the Santa Barbara County Board of Supervisors. It reviews and maintains the master plan for each County library service zone, makes recommendations to ensure adequate library services to all, determines the per capita level of service, reviews budgets, considers site locations and building programs, and reviews the operation of the library. The member represents all of Zone 4, which includes Goleta, Buellton and Solvang.
For more information, go to https://tinyurl.com/goletaboards-commissions or e-mail cityclerkgroup@cityofgoleta.org.
New Expanded Hours!
The popularity of the Goleta, Solvang, and Buellton Library branches reopening last month in limited capacity has led the branches to increase their days and hours of service. Express Service is now available Tuesday – Saturday from 10:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m., and Sidewalk Service has expanded to Tuesday – Saturday from 11:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. Click here to read more.

Buellton Library
Poetry Club - July 21
Inspired by the Goleta and Santa Ynez Libraries Book to Action program featuring They Called Us Enemy by George Takai, the Buellton Library’s next Online Poetry Club will be focusing on Japanese history and origin of the haiku. In this discussion, we will also be talking about prominent haiku poet and author Richard Wright who crafted literature on the issue of race relations in America.
