The Library Reading Corner - April 2021

Goleta Valley Library Header

A Note from Library Director Allison Gray:

With everyone age 16 and over now eligible for the COVID-19 vaccine, Library staff are looking forward to when we can reopen the Goleta and Santa Ynez Valley Libraries.

School has returned to in-person instruction with modifications, businesses are reopening with modifications, and when the three Library branches are able to reopen the buildings, our reopening will also likely be with modifications. Only a limited number of people will be able to enter at a time and patrons will be able to make an appointment online for their preferred time. Sidewalk Service will continue Wednesdays – Saturdays 11:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. for patrons to quickly grab their holds and to help those who do not have appointments enter the Library. We continue to quarantine returned items, as has been strongly recommended by the Centers for Disease Control and the Library of Congress. We expect to have to continue that for the foreseeable future.

We have received a lot of questions about when patrons can receive material from other Black Gold Libraries. Unfortunately, there is no date set for it to resume. Black Gold receives funding from the Federal Government that is funneled through the California State Library which pays for the shipment between the seven Black Gold jurisdictions. The funding was severely slashed for this 2020/21 Fiscal Year and we do not yet know what will happen for FY21/22 which begins July 1, 2021.

We have missed seeing all of you and look forward to that day when we can welcome you back into our buildings, even if it is in a limited manner! Stay tuned for more information.

Library Fines Discontinued graphic_small

Library Late Fee Fines Discontinued

The City of Goleta is pleased to report that library patrons will soon no longer be charged late fines at the Goleta and Santa Ynez Valley Libraries. The Goleta City Council unanimously approved the Library Advisory Commission’s recommendation to do away with late fines at their April 6, 2021, meeting. Beginning July 1, 2021, patrons will only be billed for items that are 30 days overdue after the original due date, and no overdue fines will be charged. Existing fines will be forgiven but patrons will still owe for unreturned materials and collection agency fees. Patrons with fines for late fees on their accounts will see those fines disappear in the next couple of weeks. Read more here: https://lnks.gd/2/TDDNdq.

Hoopla (blue)

Update to Hoopla

We are pleased that so many of our patrons are using Hoopla to access movies, music, audiobooks, ebooks, comics and TV shows from their personal device(s). However, with the increase in use, we need to limit the number of Hoopla borrows to five per month per patron in order to keep costs down; Hoopla is pay-per-borrow product for the library and we are charged for each type of item at a different rate. This is a great time to use one of our other online services such as Overdrive, operated by Black Gold, which does not have a limit on the number of items borrowed.
