A Note from Library Director Allison Gray:
Welcome to our March edition of the Reading Corner. We have so much going on that I can't wait to share with you. I am excited to reveal that we have received another Book to Action grant from the California Center for the Book! We are focusing on equity, and have selected George Takei’s marvelous graphic novel “They Called Us Enemy” about his family’s experience being uprooted from their California home and sent to an internment camp for Japanese Americans during World War II. We will be holding a number of programs between March and August on this topic, including hearing from some community members whose families were caught up in this tragic event and book discussions for teens and adults. In addition, the graphic novel artist Harmony Becker, who is responsible for the superb artwork in Takei’s autobiographical graphic novel, will be presenting a virtual talk for us in May. You can pick up your free copy of the graphic novel "They Called Us Enemy," which is an excellent read for teens and adults, at the Goleta and Santa Ynez Valley Libraries starting March 10th (while supplies last). Copies will also be available for downloading in Hoopla and borrowing at the branches.
California Center for the Book is a program of the California Library Association, supported in whole or in part by the U.S. Institute of Museum and Library Services under the provisions of the Library Services and Technology Act, administered in California by the State Librarian.
Additionally, we are partnering with UCSB Reads to participate in this year’s book selection “When They Call You a Terrorist” by Black Lives Matter co-founder Patrisse Khan-Cullors and asha bandele. Khan-Cullors will give a virtual presentation in May.

New! Request More Items
Until we are able to share materials between the other Black Gold member libraries, we are increasing the number of holds Goleta and Santa Ynez Valley Library cardholders can place at any one time. Instead of 10 maximum holds, you can now place up to 20 holds at any time. We hope this will help you get the materials you need from our three branches.

Don't Forget to Pick Up Your Craft Kit!
We have well over 1,000 families signed up for the wonderful and free Craft Kits for children. However, no one is remembering to ask for them when they visit the library to pick up their holds. We have hundreds and hundreds of creative, fun craft projects just waiting to be enjoyed by local children. If you are signed up for Craft Kits, don't forget to ask for them the next time you visit the library. If you are not yet signed up, you can do so here, all you need is a Goleta, Buellton or Solvang Library card.

New Playaway Bookpacks
We are delighted to accept a very generous donation to our Playaway Bookpack collection from Las Aletas, an Auxiliary of the Assistance League of Santa Barbara. Thanks to their wonderful generosity, almost 50 new Bookpacks for children and teens will be added to our collection in the coming weeks to promote literacy and boost reading confidence among area youth. Bookpacks are a read-along tool that include both a print and audio version of a book, providing readers the opportunity to listen to a story as they follow along on the page. This pairing is helpful in building vocabulary and strengthening reading comprehension and retention, especially for emerging and struggling readers, children who are learning English as a second language, and readers with special learning needs. Each Bookpack comes in a durable, bright orange case that contains one or more books and a portable, handheld MP3 player that is preloaded with the recorded stories.

We extend our sincerest thanks to Las Aletas and the Assistance League of Santa Barbara for this amazing addition to our collection and encourage our community members to explore this exciting new reading experience.
Our gratitude also goes out to the Friends of the Goleta Valley Library, who funded the large, original collection of Playaways in our collection.
