A Note from Library Director Allison Gray:

Happy New Year. We hope you are doing well during these ever-changing times. Please know that the Goleta Valley and Santa Ynez Valley Libraries are here for you. We know life continues to be especially challenging for parents and students and we want to make sure you are aware that we have some great resources to help with homework. Brainfuse HelpNow! offers live tutors for students of all ages and in a wide array of subjects. It is available from 1:00 – 10:00 p.m. every day. To access Brainfuse HelpNow!, all you need is an internet connection, computer or mobile device, and your library card. In addition, Brainfuse HelpNow! has a new service inspired by the popularity of the Netflix series “The Queen’s Gambit”; students can now receive online chess lessons live from chess experts.

The Goleta and Santa Ynez Valley Libraries also provide free access to Britannica School, a safe, up-to-date, and age-appropriate information resource for Elementary, Middle, and High School. With Britannica School, discover encyclopedia articles, multimedia, primary sources, games, and other learning resources that support student research and reinforce curriculum standards. A further homework help site can be found at ProQuest Homework Central, all available on our website to help you and your children get through this difficult homeschooling period. We are pleased to announce that we are now offering free, online homework help to students in Kindergarten - 8th grade. Appointments can be scheduled on our Request Homework Help webpage. More information on this new offering is below.

Get Involved at Your Library in the New Year!

Virtual volunteer opportunities await at the Goleta & Santa Ynez Valley Libraries. Applications are currently being accepted for teens and adults eager to get involved in their community by volunteering virtually at the library. Teens can earn community service hours or volunteer just for fun by completing online book reviews or contributing to the Teen Graphic Novel Club. The library is also welcoming applications for adult volunteers who are interested in providing online tutoring to help K-8 students succeed academically through the library’s virtual after-school program. NASA STEM Kits Coming to Goleta and Santa Ynez Valley Libraries

Goleta Valley Library has been awarded $5,500 in Library Services and Technology Act grant funding through the California State Library to develop STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math) kits to provide learning opportunities for all ages in the Goleta and Santa Ynez Valley communities.

This award will allow staff to create multiples of two themed kits, Sun-Earth-Moon Connections and Be a NASA Detective: Expanding Your Senses, which will contain all of the materials and supplies needed to participate in activities that introduce and reinforce STEM concepts. This project, called “Reach for the Stars,” follows a blueprint created by the NASA @ My Library program to connect NASA, public libraries, and their communities through hands-on activities and experiments. Kits will be available starting in summer 2021. Stay tuned for more information.
