SANTA BARBARA COUNTY ANNOUNCES NINTH DEATH

OF PATIENT WITH COVID-19

Eighteen Additional Confirmed Cases Also Reported

Santa Barbara County Public Health Department (PHD) is reporting the ninth death among someone who tested positive for COVID-19. The individual who passed resided in the City of Santa Barbara and un-incorporated Mission Canyon area and was in their 40’s with underlying health conditions.  As of today, May 5, there are 544 confirmed cases of COVID-19, of which 442 have fully recovered.

“We are saddened by the loss of this individual and extend our deepest condolences to their friends and family. As we continue to battle the spread of COVID-19, we ask community members to continue doing their part by wearing facial coverings while in public and continuing to practice social distancing,” said Van Do-Reynoso, PhD, Director of Public Health.

Although most cases of COVID-19 exhibit mild or moderate symptoms, PHD recommends additional measures to prevent exposure among vulnerable people, including the elderly and those with underlying health conditions (such as diabetes, cancer, immunodeficiency, asthma, COPD and others). PHD recommends that residents, especially those who are vulnerable:

  • Stay home except for essential tasks
  • When engaging in essential tasks away from home, remain 6 feet away from others and wear a facial covering
  • Wash your hands with soap and water
  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose, or mouth with unwashed hands
  • Avoid close contact with people who are sick
  • Keep surfaces clean by wiping them down with a household disinfectant
