Goleta City Council to Practice Social Distancing at Tonight’s City Council Meeting and Will Consider Several COVID-19 Emergency Matters

Public Encouraged to Watch the Meeting Live from Home

As part of enhanced measures to prevent the spread of COVID-19, the City of Goleta will be practicing social distancing at tonight’s March 17, 2020 City Council meeting which begins at 5:30 p.m. at City Hall Council Chambers located at 130 Cremona Drive.

City Council members, staff and members of the public will be required to sit at least six feet apart. The room will be set up to ensure there is proper spacing to accommodate this public health guideline.  While the meeting will be open to the public, community members are encouraged to watch the meeting live from the convenience of their home either on Channel 19 or on our website at https://tinyurl.com/GoletaMeetings.

Even though the time to submit a public comment via e-mail has passed for tonight’s City Council meeting, you may still send your comment to our City Clerk at cityclerkgroup@cityofgoleta.org and it will be placed into the record for that meeting. Typically, comments submitted by e-mail must be sent in by noon on the day prior to the scheduled meeting to be reviewed by Council.

The City of Goleta is working diligently to find a way the public, City Council and staff can participate in meetings remotely in the immediate future. We appreciate your patience as we come up with a streamlined process that is efficient and user-friendly. We will let you know as soon as we have a plan in place.

We also want to let the community know that there will not be a COVID-19 presentation from Santa Barbara County Public Health Department (SBCPHD) at tonight’s City Council meeting as previously planned.  Our partners at SBCPHD are extremely busy and we are in close communication. We will pass along any timely information as it pertains to the Goleta community as soon as we receive it.

At tonight’s meeting, Council will be asked to consider ratification of the local emergency proclamation made by the City Manager on March 14, 2020. In addition, Council will be asked to consider whether, in light of the COVID-19 pandemic:

  • Temporary limitations on public places during the COVID-19 crisis, such as restaurants, bars, nightclubs, gyms, fitness centers, bowling alleys, movie theaters, and arcades, formal and informal organized and group activities of any size, including but not limited to all games and sports, with the exception of family outings, access to play structures and exercise equipment in all City parks, beaches, and open spaces
  • Temporary Moratorium on Evictions for Non-Payment of Rent by Residential Tenants Impacted by the COVID-19 Crisis.
  • Temporary Moratorium on Evictions for Non-Payment of Rent by Commercial Tenants Impacted by the COVID-19 Crisis.

A staff report and proposed resolution with orders relating to these items will be presented to Council at tonight’s meeting.

We encourage you to go to our City of Goleta website which has up to date information on the City of Goleta’s response to COVID-19.  Please also visit the Santa Barbara County Public Health Department’s portal dedicated to providing the latest information regarding the evolving coronavirus situation.

Thank you Goleta residents for supporting us as we work through this crisis together. Stay healthy, stay informed and thanks for doing your part to help prevent the transmission of COVID-19.
