The Library Reading Corner - February 2020

A Note from Library Director Allison Gray: 

We are very excited to announce that we are again the recipients of a Book to Action grant by the California Center for the Book.  This year we are focusing on Britt Collins’ compelling, fast read titled “Strays: The True Story of a Lost Cat, a Homeless Man and Their Journey Across America.” 

All of our branches will have multiple copies available for borrowing.  We will be hosting book discussions as well as craft programs for children and adults.  Goleta is extremely honored to be hosting Britt Collins for a presentation; she is coming all the way from the UK to speak here!

The Book to Action grant requires social action activities and we will be hosting three shelter animal adoption events at Goleta Valley Library in May & June, in partnership with ASAP, BUNS, and DAWG.

Coming Soon – Kanopy! 

Kanopy is a steaming video service that works similarly to Hoopla.  It offers thousands of critically-acclaimed movies, documentaries, foreign films, and children’s content.   Keep an eye out on the Library website for its mid-February debut!

Mental Health and Wellness Kits

Thanks to a Library Services and Technology Act (LSTA) grant from the California State Library, the Library will have kits for people in the early-, mid- and late-stages of dementia.  The kits contain music, games, manipulatives, and other items that help exercise the brain.  They will be available in Goleta’s  Library of Things collection.  Solvang and Buellton will also have these kits available.

A large collection of children’s mental health kits was received by the Goleta Valley Library.  These kits are themed around topics such as anxiety in children, grief, bravery, etc.  Check them out.

Participate in the Adult Winter Reading Club through February 28

There's still time to participate in the Goleta Valley Library's Adult Winter Reading Club! Patrons are encouraged to read or listen to as many books (including magazines and periodicals) as they can through February 28, 2020, to be entered into a weekly raffle to win prizes. While filling out your raffle ticket, check out the Library’s “Did You Know” display, showcasing the many services offered by the Goleta Valley Library. Prizes are donated by our very generous local businesses. Sign up to participate in person at the library.

BUELLTON LIBRARY

Build with LEGOs

Drop by the Buellton Library on Saturday, February 22 between 1:00 and 4:00 p.m. to build with LEGOs! Bring a friend and build whatever your imagination comes up with. Building with others promotes problem solving, spacial awareness and teamwork skills in young children. No registration is required. All library events are free and open to the public. Best for ages 5 and up.

Writers Workshop

The Buellton Library offers a free Writers Workshop every second Saturday of the month from 12:30 – 2:00 p.m. for teens and adults. This is a great opportunity to share your work, meet other writers from beginning to advanced, and discuss the tools of the trade. Topics of each workshop vary month to month. Workshops are open to the public (no registration required) and led by library staff and local author Craig Clevenger. SOLVANG LIBRARY

D. I. Y. Hand-made Journal

D.I.Y is a new(ish) series of programs for ages 10 – adult at both Solvang and Buellton Libraries, offering hands-on opportunities in a variety of arts and technology projects. February’s D.I.Y. project in Solvang will introduce participants to basic book binding skills. Come by on Saturday, February 15 from 1:00 - 3:30 p.m. to learn how to fold, sew, and assemble a journal using re-purposed book covers and blank fill paper.  Materials provided, please register online, using the Events Calendar, as space is limited.

Rare Plants of Santa Barbara County: A Lecture with Dr. Heather Schneider 

The rare plant biologist of Santa Barbara Botanic Garden will address “why uncommon plants matter and what we’re doing to save them” on Wednesday, February 19 at 7:00 p.m. at the Los Olivos Community Organization Hall (2374 Alamo Pintado Avenue). This free program is co-hosted by the Santa Ynez Valley Natural History Society, Santa Ynez Valley Botanic Garden, Los Olivos Community Organization, and the Los Olivos Library.
