Caltrans Emergency Repairs Underway for Sinkhole at Southbound Hwy 101 Turnpike On-ramp

Public Works

The City of Goleta is sharing the latest information from Caltrans on the sinkhole at the Turnpike on-ramp of Highyway 101 southbound.

The southbound US Highway 101 on-ramp at Turnpike Road remains closed due to a sinkhole located between the on-ramp and the right shoulder of the southbound lanes. This sinkhole was discovered on December 27, followed by the closure of the on-ramp to maintain public safety. Caltrans and the contractor immediately began developing a repair strategy.

Caltrans will begin excavation work under an emergency contract today, Friday, January 10 with construction planned seven days a week from 6:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m.  Construction activities will include replacing the entire length of deteriorated corrugated steel pipe at depths of up to 40 below the surface.  It is anticipated this ramp will re-open the week of February 3, weather permitting.

Motorists headed southbound may enter US 101 at South Patterson Avenue or State Street and can expect delays not to exceed 10 minutes.

The contractor for this $1 million project is Granite Construction of Santa Barbara, CA.

Caltrans reminds motorists to move over and slow down when driving through highway construction zones.
