Goleta Valley Library's Reading Corner - September 2019

It can be difficult to find accurate, reliable information quickly online.  Sure, Google is great, but when you search a term, you literally get millions of results.  Why not try our website?  At www.GoletaValleyLibrary.org, we have curated an excellent collection of websites on all sorts of topics we thought would be most helpful to you.  The Online Research section lists hundreds of sites, broken down by topic, such as: Legal Information, Travel & Geography, Readers, Senior Resources, etc…The website also contains free databases such as the New York Times online.  Find phone numbers and addresses for individuals and businesses at ReferenceUSA; this site is a great way to track down old friends.

New Books & Materials Available Soon!

We are excited for all of the new books and materials that will be available soon at the Goleta, Buellton and Solvang Libraries! Huge quantities of material are being processed at the Goleta Library, and will be sent to the other branches shortly. We hope you like what we've ordered for you!

Tutoring Volunteers Needed!

The Goleta Valley Library is looking volunteers for our Afterschool Homework Help program. Adult tutors are needed Tuesdays and Thursdays from 3:00 - 6:15 p.m. beginning in October.  Learn more and ask for an application at the front desk.

Make Your Own Japanese Side Sewn Journal

Attend a class on Tuesday, September 17, from 2:00 – 3:00 p.m. at the Goleta Valley Library to learn how to make a Japanese side sewn journal. During the class you will learn how to: prepare paper and cover for binding; create sewing stations for binding; and learn four stitches: Four-hole, Noble, Hemp Leaf and Tortoise Shell. Afterwards, you can use your simple and elegant new bound book as a sketchbook, journal, photo album, or artist's book. 

Welcome New Buellton Library Branch Supervisor!

The Goleta Valley and Santa Ynez Valley Libraries Group is pleased to announce that Hillary Johnson has been hired as the new Branch Supervisor for the Buellton Library! She started in the position on August 19, 2019. Library Director Allison Gray said, "Hilary has several years of pertinent experience in Santa Barbara public libraries that make her the perfect choice for the Buellton community. Hillary is especially talented at working with families – her story times for young children were famous in Santa Barbara!"

RBdigital Magazines

Get unlimited access to digital magazines at RBdigital.  You can subscribe to your favorite magazines and they will alert you when the newest issue is available.  RBdigital has a wide variety of magazines available, from Cook’s Illustrated to Cosmopolitan, The Economist to Golf Digest, Guitar Player to Mother Jones.  Download the app from the iPhone app store, Google Play or Kindle Fire.  Links are available on the Black Gold website.

Solvang Eagle Scout Project

Eagle Scout candidate Jackson Davenport is transforming the Solvang Library patio space with a team of other scouts and community recruits.  They've started by cutting back overgrown shrubs and vines, and will be continuing this month refinishing the teak patio furniture, cleaning the shade structure, repairing the drip sprinkler system, replanting the garden beds where needed, and possibly adding murals on the stucco pillars.  Since the library is small, the patio space adds a place for patrons to read, relax, meet with a tutor, or enjoy lunch. The refurbished space will be welcoming to all.  Stop by to see the progress!

Updates on the Santa Ynez Valley Libraries

The Santa Ynez Valley libraries were excited about distributing new cards with a Valley Oak leaf and acorn (Quercus lobata) on the front - so appropriate to the area!  Special thanks go to local publisher Cachuma Press for contributing the design, and for the illustration "Oaks of California" created by Allison Atwill.

After months of empty shelves in the "New" book areas, the SYV libraries were able to add over 70 new books during the month of July as a result of the Goleta Valley Library's policy of allowing our small branches to take advantage of generous gifts of new titles from the community. The Solvang Library is organizing a group of volunteers to assist with processing these new gift materials. 

A bookmark design contest is happening now in Solvang! From September 1-30, students in TK-8th grade can submit their bookmark design. Winners in each age group will have their designs printed and distributed as bookmarks at the library.  For rules and entry forms, please contact the library in person at 1745 Mission Drive, Solvang, by phone at 805-688-4214, or via email: solvanglibrary@cityofgoleta.org.
