Goleta Valley Library's Reading Corner - January 2019

Welcome to the inaugural edition of the Goleta Valley Library’s newsletter!  Each month we will be sending you a brief update highlighting a few of the programs, special events, and activities going on at the Library.  For complete information on all of our programs, reference databases, suggested booklists for all ages, and much more, please visit our website at www.goletavalleylibrary.org.  You can also “like” us on Facebook for the latest information.

Since July we’ve received a number of grants and I’d like to highlight our Book to Action grant.  We will be creating a full slate of programs around the book “Ocean Country” by Liz Cunningham.  There will be a community-wide book discussion, children’s programming based on ocean crafts, a presentation by incredibly talented underwater photographer Richard Salas, a visit from the author herself, and to celebrate International Ocean Day, a family beach clean-up day at Haskell’s Beach in June.  We are very excited for everyone to read Ms. Cunningham’s book which was written after a near-drowning experience.  She decided to travel the world to view different areas’ efforts to rehabilitate our endangered oceans.  It is poetic, stirring, and above all, hopeful.  Look for a brochure with all of the events listed coming soon!

Adult Winter Reading Club

New Year, New You!  The Annual Adult Winter Reading Club runs from January 2 – February 28, 2019. It’s easy and fun. Try a new hobby, a new sport, a new language or maybe just a new book!  Just read books, fill out raffle tickets for each one you finish, and maybe win a great prize from one of our many generous community sponsors.  Stop in at the Library after you read your first book of the year to join the Reading Club.

Weekly Programs for Infants and Toddlers

Join staff member Nicole Lvoff, “Baby-Whisperer Extraordinaire”, for her wonderful weekly programs for infants and toddlers.  “Baby & Me” is for infants ages birth through 14 months & a parent or caregiver.  Nicole leads the group in songs, short stories, bubbles, parachute play and community building.  Thursdays from 11:15 – 11:45 a.m.  Children ages 14 – 36 months and a parent/caregiver will love Wiggly Storytime on Tuesdays from 10:15 – 10:45 a.m.  All Goleta Valley Library events are free.

Coming Soon - Afterschool Homework Help

Calling all seniors!  We need volunteers to provide afterschool homework help to kids in grades Kindergarten through Fifth Grade on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons from 3:30 – 6:00 p.m.   We will train you to access live tutors through an online system for those hard math questions and all other types of homework topics.  We hope to debut the program in April.  Check the Library website and our Facebook page for updates and more information.

What Could be More Fun than Reading to a Dog?

Kids can get practice reading aloud to one of the most uncritical audiences there is – a trained service dog.  The Channel City Kennel Club provides us with loving listeners.  It’s a great way for reluctant readers to practice.  Best for emerging readers ages 5 years and up.  Check the Library calendar for more information.
