There is a lot going on related
to bicycle projects in Goleta and we wanted to provide this update on a number
of them.
Bicycle Pedestrian Master Plan
Our Bicycle Pedestrian Master
Plan (BPMP) has kicked off and we’re in outreach mode. It was great to hear from the 250
people who stopped by the booth at the Lemon Festival and Camino Real Farmers’
Market to provide input and we are looking forward to the next public workshops on November 9.

transportation equity. Please give us

Complete Streets
Complete
Streets is the project to
consider a redesign of Hollister Avenue in Old Town (from Fairview Avenue to State Route
217) to improve how people, bicycles and cars get around, and to make the area
more visually appealing through landscape and streetscape enhancements. As we gear up to begin this public input and
design process, we will have a number of opportunities for you to give
feedback. Stay tuned for details and click
here for more information.
Other bicycle projects we are
working on include:
-
Hollister
Class I Bike Path – Scheduled to go out
to bid in December, the Hollister Class I Bike Path will be built from Pacific
Oaks Drive west to Ellwood School, creating a way for the many school children
living south of Hollister Avenue to safely bike to Ellwood School. Existing sidewalks will be replaced and new
street trees will be planted. Hollister Avenue will still have four lanes of
travel with a center left turn lane. Work
is set to begin in late spring 2017, and in an effort to not disrupt students,
construction impacting the sidewalk along the south side of Hollister Avenue
will begin in summer when school is out.
-
Ward
Drive Class II Bike Lanes – This project will deliver
5 foot Class II bike lanes along Ward Drive from Hollister Avenue to the
southern terminus of Ward Drive at the Atascadero Creek / Obern Trail. Ward Drive will be widened and a new sidewalk
constructed where one currently does not exist along the west side of Ward
Drive in front of the Rancho Goleta Mobile Home Park and will tie into the
existing sidewalk to the north. The
design phase is wrapping up and the project is scheduled to go out to bid in
December, with construction proposed to begin in spring 2017.
-
Maria
Ygnacio Creek Bike Path Lighting – Cyclists
can look forward to a brighter path. While
the County of Santa Barbara has installed lighting along the portion of the
Maria Ygnacio Bike Trail located within the County limits, the trail remains
unlit along the segment passing through the City of Goleta. The project will install 12 independent solar
powered LED lighting fixtures along this 1,750 foot unlit portion from
Hollister Avenue to the trail bridge that crosses the Maria Ygnacio Creek. These improvements will dramatically enhance
the safety of commuters using the bike path during dark hours. The electrical equipment has been ordered and
installation should begin in November and take approximately two weeks.
Thanks for your interest
in Goleta!
