Every Drop Counts, Please Use Water Wisely!
Following the second driest year on record and with near record low storage in California’s largest reservoirs, on August 2021, the Glendale City Council & GWP implemented Phase II of Mandatory Water Conservation. Phase II of the Mandatory Water Conservation Ordinance limits outside watering to three days a week: Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday for no more than 10 minutes at each watering station.
On October 19, 2021, Governor Gavin Newsom issued a proclamation extending the drought emergency statewide and further urging Californians to step up their water conservation efforts. The City appreciates the efforts that residents have made to conserve water, and continues to encourage residents to be diligent in their water usage.
Some water savings tip include:
- Watering lawn no more than 3x per week, even less during the winter.
- Keeping sprinklers off for at least 2 days when it rains.
- Wash full loads in the dishwasher or washing machine.
- Install a low-flow showerhead. Click here to purchase one from our new marketplace.
- Use a nozzle on your hose while washing your car.
- Repair leaks, replace damaged sprinklers heads, and adjust sprinklers to avoid over-spray.
- Use mulch under trees and plants to retain moisture.
Water early in the mornings or late at night.
Most of a customer’s water usage is used for outside landscaping. The easiest way to conserve is to curtail outdoor watering as much as possible. Visit www.mwdh2o.com, www.Bewaterwise.com or GWP's website for more tips and information on conserving water. See the article below to see how you can view your water usage and sign up for leak alerts.

Power Content Label - See How Much Clean Energy We Invest In
See GWP's investments in clean energy. In comparison to our neighboring cities, GWP is well on track to meet our clean energy goals. Under the California Energy Commission’s (CEC) Power Source Disclosure Program, Glendale Water and Power is required to disclose to its retail consumers about the energy resources used to provide electricity service, as well as the greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions intensity associated with its retail electricity portfolio through an annual Power Content Label. For comparison, the label includes a summary of California’s overall power mix during the same period. The resources mix is shown as a percentage of actual Retail Sales.

Turning Waste into Energy to Power Homes
GWP is proposing a Biogas Renewable Generation project that will generate approximately 12 megawatts of renewable energy for the City of Glendale on an approximately two-acre portion of the City’s Scholl Canyon Landfill. Landfills naturally generate biogas as waste decomposes. Biogas is composed of methane, carbon dioxide, hydrogen, oxygen, and small amounts of other compounds. Today, Glendale is required by law to capture and flare the biogas into the atmosphere with no environmental or economic benefits. Instead of allowing biogas to escape into the atmosphere, this innovative facility will allow us to turn the biogas into energy to power over 11,000 Glendale homes, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year!
Biogas is an essential renewable energy source, and is consistent and reliable unlike other types of renewable energy. This form of renewable energy can produce power at night and through any weather conditions. As most people are home in the evening turning on lights, running the AC, and charging their electric vehicles, this facility will be there to help supply power in those hours of need.
This project is important in protecting our environment for many years to come. Even if the City’s Scholl Canyon Landfill were to close tomorrow, we will still benefit from this project because we must continue to control the biogas that is produced at the landfill for another 30 or more years after closure.

Meeting The Future Energy Needs of Glendale
The Grayson Power Plant has been steadfastly serving our City since the early 1940s, and after its successful and prolonged run, much of its existing infrastructure and equipment is due for replacement. The proposed Grayson Repowering Project would replace aged, unreliable, inefficient, and high maintenance equipment at the Grayson Power Plant with a combination of energy storage and new, efficient, faster-starting, and more environmentally-responsible generation technologies. The proposed project means providing efficient and reliable power to Glendale homes and businesses, especially in times of emergency and high demand.
The need to repower is also environmental. The modern units will have the flexibility to turn on and off quickly and provide reserve energy to support increasing amounts of intermittent solar and renewable energy.
On August 9, 2021, GWP published the Partially Recirculated Draft Environmental Impact Report (PR-DEIR) for a 98-day public comment period. The report is available for public review at graysonrepowering.com/#2021-pr-deir.
The PR-DEIR examines two new project alternatives, provides project updates to the environmental impact report analysis, including an update on Cultural and Paleontological Resources impacts, and adds the analysis of Energy and Wildfire environmental impact categories.
An overview of the PR-DEIR will be presented in mid-January to the GWP Commission and the Sustainability Commission. The PR-DEIR will be presented for approval to the City Council on Tuesday, January 25, 2022.
Visit www.GraysonRepowering.com for more information regarding these meetings and to learn about the benefits of having an environmentally sound community-owned power plant. The website also has information on how to submit your comments on the PR-DEIR. The deadline to submit comments on the PR-DEIR is November 15, 2021.
