Construction is slated to begin this Friday (March 2) on repairs to a damaged storm drain which caused a sinkhole to form late last week on Rosecrans Avenue at Gilbert Street.

A video inspection of the approximately 50-year-old drain pipe located numerous spots where the metal pipe had rotted through, causing the surface of the roadway to collapse. City engineers said there is too much damage to the pipe to replace only a section, so the entire storm drain pipe needs replacement.

Ron Bowers, senior civil engineer for the city, said the repairs will take approximately two weeks to complete, and will include having the crews work through this weekend (March 3 and 4).

During the repair period, traffic on Rosecrans will be reduced to one lane in each direction during working hours. Crews will work from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. on weekdays, and 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on the weekend.

Contractor on the project is Dominguez Construction, and the approximate cost of the repair work is $54,000. The work will include removing two 36-inch corrugated metal storm drain pipes and replacing them with two reinforced concrete pipes. Crews will also repave the damaged section of street.

Further information about the project may be obtained by calling the City of Fullerton Engineering Department at (714) 738-6845.
