The City of Fullerton has received notification from the Orange County Registrar of Voters that the recall petitions against three council members have sufficient signatures to qualify for the ballot.

The petitions asked the city to place a recall of Council Members Dr. F. Richard Jones, M.D., Don Bankhead and Pat McKinley on the ballot. The City Council will certify the signatures at the Feb. 21 council meeting.

According to Fullerton City Clerk, Lucinda Williams, “The California Election Code allows the city to hold this special election in consolidation with the June 5 presidential primary. The council has some discretion on the election date, within certain parameters outlined in the Elections Code.”

The city has already paid nearly $10,000 to validate signatures, but the final cost to the city for the recall is dependent on how the council chooses to proceed, noted Williams. “If the council decides to hold a stand-alone special election the cost will be between $269,000 and $301,000. If the council chooses to consolidate with the June primary then the cost will be between $129,000 and 160,000.”

Sometime mid-February Fullerton citizens who wish to run for the open council seats should the recall pass, can begin the process by contacting the City Clerk’s Office at CityClerk'sOffice@ci.fullerton.ca.us or calling (714) 738-6350. The fee to file for candidacy is $25 and there is an optional $1,200 fee if you wish to have a candidate’s statement on the ballot.

The cut-off date for filing is March 9.
