Water Conservation Tips

Water is a finite natural resource that requires our protection and conservation efforts in order to preserve.  How can you contribute to these conservation efforts?

There are many ways to save water around your home, here are just a few:

  • It is very important to check your sprinklers and irrigation lines monthly. Check your yard for damp spots that do not dry or oversoaked ground near sprinkler heads which can indicate a leaking irrigation line. Turn on your sprinklers and check each sprinkler head; a broken sprinkler head can waist up to 15 gallons per minute!
  • Repair leaks as soon as possible. If you think you may have a leak, you can check your water meter’s flow indicator to confirm. To learn more about how to read your meter, visit the City of Fullerton website and search How to Read My Meter.
  • Replace older shower heads, toilets, washers and sprinkler stations with water conserving models. Rebates are available through the Metropolitan Water District of Southern California at socalwatersmart.com.
  • Limit sprinkler cycles to 5 minutes - this is usually how long it takes for the ground to become fully saturated. Also, have your sprinkler cycle run before 10am and after 4pm. Evaporation is strongest during the midday sun.
  • Consider hand watering vegetable gardens and ornamental plants. When using a hose, ensure that you have a positive shut off nozzle.
  • Plant California Native or drought tolerant plants to reduce the need for watering. Landscape classes provided by G3 can be found at FullertonWaterConservation.com.
  • If you see water being wasted in our community, you can report it by using the MyFullerton App or you can call the Water Help Line at (714) 738-6744.
  • If you have any additional questions about rebates or conservation opportunities you can call the Water Help Line at (714) 738-6744
