Throughout the week, students ranging from middle school to graduate-level engineering took part in tours at advanced manufacturing companies representing life sciences, semiconductors, cleantech, and autotech, providing an opportunity to tour cutting-edge facilities and engage with executives, technicians, engineers, and hiring managers about the exciting range of career paths in modern manufacturing. Our educational partners were critical in the success of Manufacturing Week, namely Fremont Unified, Mission Valley ROP, Ohlone College Smart Manufacturing Technology and Biotechnology Programs, and CSU East Bay Department of Engineering. As Silicon Valley’s advanced manufacturing hub, Fremont is proud to be a leader in regional workforce development and helping ensure the future success of our advanced industries by strengthening talent pipelines between our companies and local students.

Q: Can you tell us about your journey in turning a car dealership into a state-of-the-art restaurant?
William (Bill): When the building was red tagged, Roy asked the other tenant to leave and then got the building out of being red tagged. We then leased it out to another dealership and Roy said, "You know Bill, let's cancel that lease on the dealership and let's open a restaurant." I was very reluctant and told Roy we should think this out. Later on that night, Roy called me and said, "I don't want to push you into anything, but I think it would be better to put a restaurant here." Roy had the vision of having a restaurant here.
Q: Can you tell us about the working dynamic with having three owners?
William (Bill): Roy brings the property; the building and his thoughts and Priscilla came from Skillet'z Cafe and helps us a lot. Our biggest key for success is behind the scenes, with my family, my daughter and son who have another restaurant that we started 3 years ago. It was their idea and when we told them what we wanted to do, they jumped in and helped us get it off the ground. My daughter came for 6 months every day, working and showing us the ins and outs of this business. That is kind of how it all started. Everybody jumped in together like one big melting pot.
Q: How does Billy Roy's positively impact the community?
William (Bill): We hold all our events at our outside patios. We host city events, local school events, some of which include American High School and Newark High School. We often cook food for free and send food to schools so they can sell it to raise money to help the school. We also help all the local softball and soccer teams and host their events. Our goal is to bring the whole community together!
Q: How was your experience working with the City of Fremont?
William (Bill): You learn that with the city, if you work with them and explain to them what you want, they will give their input and help a lot. Nikki from Economic Development helps us often and even you conducting this interview helps us with getting the word out regarding what we are doing and what we are seeking to do in the future. If it wasn't for the City of Fremont, with their input on helping us, this probably wouldn't be here today.
