Fall into Autumn and stay informed with the latest in Fremont's active economy! Here’s the TL;DR of this month's issue:

A decade ago, Nextracker revolutionized the solar industry by developing tracking systems that enable solar panels to follow the sun's path. At the time, solar was just 2% of California’s power mix. Today, Nextracker’s technology has become ubiquitous with the massive utility-scale installations that now power one-third of the state’s annual energy generation. Emboldened by the landmark Inflation Reduction Act (IRA), Nextracker has partnered with Fremont-based electronics manufacturer Asteelflash to open dedicated production line to build essential components, part of a larger commitment to domesticize Nextracker’s entire supply chain. This exciting development further positions Fremont as a pivotal hub for reshoring manufacturing and bolstering domestic clean energy, enhancing community resilience and national security.

A CBS newsclip recently featured battery storage pioneer Enervenue, a Fremont-based company redefining energy storage with their versatile, durable, and long-lasting battery technology. Unlike energy-dense lithium-ion batteries, Enervenue’s technology uses nickel hydrogen which is more cost-effective to source materials for and maintains its performance even in rugged conditions. Their fire-safety-tested battery technology boasts a lifespan of 30,000 cycles—equivalent to three daily charges for 30 years—and has even been used in space! Enervenue’s technology is ready to be deployed at utility scale, combining with solar and wind generation to provide safe, reliable power.
The City of Fremont was awarded funds through the East Bay Economic Development Alliance (EBEDA) to support its Priority Production Areas, a program of the MTC to provide long-range planning and resources for the greater Bay Area’s most important industrial areas. Along with fellow I-880 corridor cities of Oakland, San Leandro, and Union City, the $500K in awarded funds will examine long-term infrastructure needs of the participating cities’ industrial districts, support the development of comprehensive design guidelines, and provide recommendations for addressing challenges posed by sea level rise, seismic activity, and climate change. For more information, see EBEDA’s Press Release.

Catherine Trinh (Co-Owner Raw Superfood Cafe)
Q: Tell us a bit about your journey in opening a restaurant. How long has opening a restaurant been your and your husband’s goal?
Catherine: My journey in starting a restaurant business happened about 6 years ago, when my husband Quan (the founder) was going through a heart disease, and we were going on a journey trying to discover other ways that we can heal our bodies without a lot of medical intervention. We discovered that plant-based foods is the way to go and that's how this restaurant came about.
Q: What food items does Raw Superfood Café offer?
Catherine: We offer burgers, toast, bagels, adaptogenic lattes, and a lot of lunch and dinner items.
Q: How was your experience working with the City of Fremont?
Catherine: The City of Fremont is a progressive and supportive city. We were the first ones on the Downtown Strip and the city encouraged us to open faster and were very helpful getting us set up. This is what sets Fremont aside from other cities.
Q: Why did you choose to locate in Downtown Fremont?
Catherine: We chose to locate in Downtown Fremont because at our original location in Milpitas, we found a lot of customers were coming from Fremont. One of our missions is to be a healthy food option for people and in order to do that, we brought our restaurant to where our customers are. We also learned that Fremont is the happiest city to live in and it has been proven over the last year and a half of being open that people are very happy!
Join us on Saturday, September 9, for Taste of Summer, a free community festival from 11:00 am - 5:00 pm at Ellsworth Street and Washington Blvd in the historic Mission San Jose district. Stroll around the safe and vehicle-free zone to enjoy market vendors, entertainment, kids activities, “try-it” exercise classes, food trucks, and community.
A year ago, hundreds of Fremont residents were drawn to this same intersection for Mission San Jose Better Block, a community-building event where 89% of attendees said they wanted to see more of these events. In response, the MSJ Chamber of Commerce picked up the mantle and started planning more street fairs, starting with Arts Mosaic in April 2022. The Taste of Summer event on September 9 builds on the successes of Better Block and Arts Mosaic, bringing in even more exciting local vendors and food trucks, and introducing activities for all ages at the Montessori School of Fremont’s parking lot just across the street. Try out a short “Come as You Are” Yoga class with Sherri Plaza, shake it up in Zumba with Christina Chua, learn some movie-worthy dance moves with Sun Bollywood, or keep the kids busy with games and art. See you there!

The indie film Fremont was released to theatres on August 25, 2023, after first debuting at Sundance in early 2023 where it received three awards and six additional nominations. This 91-minute drama, shot in Fremont and other parts of the East Bay, tells the story of Donya, a recent Afghan refugee who is overcome with thoughts of her past working as an American interpreter in Afghanistan while trying to establish her new life in the U.S. The movie debuted locally at the Ciné Lounge Fremont 7, as well as other theaters in the Bay Area and beyond.
