The City of Fremont welcomed Export-Import (EXIM) Bank Chair Reta Jo Lewis and a distinguished delegation from D.C. on June 27 to hold a Game Changer Roundtable with executives of 10 leading Fremont companies in energy storage, renewable energy, biopharma, and semiconductors. Given the nationwide push to reshore and domesticize supply chains for industries of national security interests, Fremont was a naturally aligned fit for Chair Lewis to hear the challenges and opportunities for advanced technology manufacturers to strengthen their domestic supply chains and better compete globally. EXIM Bank provides loan guarantees, credit insurance, and working capital loans to empower US companies to increase their exports to global markets.

Naueen and Waqas Khan (Dekalash Fremont)
Q: Tell us a bit about yourself and where your passion for the beauty industry began.
Naueen: My name is Naueen Khan, and I am originally from Lahore, Pakistan. I moved to Fremont about 30 years ago and I have always been drawn to beauty, art, painting and I just love this field!
Q: Is this your first time starting a business?
Naueen: This is my first time starting a business.
Waqas: I have been involved with multiple startups, so I have been in the high-tech area for a long time. None of them were a small business, so this is a new adventure for both of us. Operating a business in the beauty industry and making people feel like their best version of themselves is very rewarding!
Q: Has owning a business in the beauty industry always been your goal?
Naueen: I was mostly a stay-at-home mom raising three kids, but I knew that once they were out of school, I would be doing something for myself. Since I have always been interested in beauty and art, we decided to look at franchises and Dekalash spoke to us.
Q: How has your experience been working with the City?
Waqas: We have been very happy with the city; they have been nothing but helpful working through the steps needed to open a business. The fire department, planning department, economic development department and all the inspectors have been more than willing to go the extra mile to get our business up and running.
Makerspaces - collaborative spaces with tools and shared knowledge where people walk in with an idea and walk out with a prototype - encourage creativity, problem solving, and technology literacy, all essential skills for success in today's workforce. City staff were joined by Alameda County Library and Irvington High School faculty in visiting Props & Pop, a Fremont small business specializing in 3D printing and rapid prototyping with a pop culture twist.
Owners Paul and Maxine use their combined 30+ years of experience in 3D modeling and printing, hand sculpting, silicone casting, and painting to produce custom-built collectibles, Pokémon-shaped planters, and many other creative pieces. Champions for makerspaces are working to expand access to makerspaces in Fremont schools and libraries, where the next generation of entrepreneurs, scientists, and creatives can experience the rewarding process of seeing their ideas come to life all by themselves.
