As Fremont and the East Bay Area region braces for future impacts to the power grid and energy supply stemming from heatwaves and natural disasters such as wildfires, the need for community energy resiliency is more relevant than ever. Fremont has partnered with East Bay Community Energy (EBCE), who is leveraging the technical expertise of Fremont-based Gridscape to install solar and microgrid systems at the City's critical facilities, including Fremont PD headquarters and City Hall. Along with additional locations in San Leandro, Berkeley and Hayward, the systems will provide an installed capacity of 3.1 MW of solar panels and 6.2 MWh of battery storage.
This is not Fremont's first time deploying this type of infrastructure at its facilities as three of the City's fire stations already run on microgrids using technologies from Fremont-based Gridscape, Delta Electronics and SepiSolar. The fire station microgrids will save the City a quarter million dollars in energy costs through peak load shedding over the next decade while also decreasing the municipal greenhouse gas footprint by 80,000 pounds of CO2 annually. Notably, Fremont's fire station projects were the first of its kind for Gridscape, who has grown considerably since that time and now has over 500 installations across the State.
With this infrastructure in place, the City's most critical facilities will have a reliable source of backup power from clean energy to continue operating during extreme events.
Many Fremont businesses are at the forefront of innovation and environmental sustainability. One means to a sustainable future is by producing green hydrogen, made by using electricity from a renewable energy source (e.g. wind, solar) to split water into hydrogen and oxygen. By comparison, the overwhelming majority of hydrogen produced today is "grey" hydrogen, produced with natural gas which emits harmful greenhouse gases.
Headquartered in Fremont, Ohmium produces hydrogen electrolyzer equipment that can be used by industries such as steelmaking, public utilities and transportation for renewable and emission-free green hydrogen. The Econ Dev team recently visited the company and was given a warm welcome by CEO Arne Ballantine and CTO Chock Karuppaiah. In timely fashion, the company just announced a massive $250M Series C funding round, that will enable the company to expand to 2 GW in annual manufacturing capacity and the deployment of projects across its growing customer pipeline.
With the recent passage of the Inflation Reduction Act, the green hydrogen economy has gained much-needed momentum to accelerate our path to a sustainable future and has been a boon for companies like Ohmium to continue investing in Fremont.
Headquartered in Fremont, Linear Integrated Systems has been at the vanguard of the semiconductor industry for over 30 years and manufactures high-quality discrete components serving a wide range of markets including automated test equipment, professional audio, medical electronics, military and test & measurement. The Fremont team continues to support the semiconductor ecosystem and leverage funding and policies like the CHIPS Act to retain and encourage the growth of companies like Linear Systems.

Aura Owners Neelam and Ketan Thakkar
Q: Tell us a bit about yourself and where your passion for skincare and beauty comes from?
Neelam: When I was very young, I always loved makeup and skin care. When I came to America, I saw that people were very fond of makeup, skin care and the beauty industry, so I did my research and went to beauty school and received my certification as an esthetician and cosmetologist. Then, I started working in a day spa for several years, but I always had the dream to have my own high-end spa. I opened my own spa first in Charlotte, North Carolina, and built my clientele and received great feedback. Now we decided to move to California and this is where I want to fulfill my long-term dream.
Q: How do you want your clients to feel when visiting Aura Skin-N-Beauty?
Neelam: I want my clients to feel welcomed, relaxed, rejuvenated, and comfortable. I also want to give them personalized treatments and proper education and knowledge to care for their skin.
Q: Why did you choose to locate in Downtown Fremont?
Ketan: My wife and I always wanted to have a big day spa. My wife is a cosmetologist and esthetician and we visited Fremont last year and found that Downtown Fremont was a good developing neighborhood with a lot of foot traffic and good surrounding commercialized buildings. We really liked this area and decided that we wanted to have our own business here.
Q: How has your experience been working with the City?
Ketan: The permitting process with the City of Fremont was really straight forward. Once we submitted documentation, they got back to us as soon as possible. Also, the Economic Development manager and the City of Fremont helped us get our inspections scheduled and we called or texted whenever we needed them. The City of Fremont was so helpful and worked with us to make sure we were comfortable and that our business opened on time.
