On February 22nd Fremont Economic Development and Community Development staff joined Tesla for the opening of its new Engineering headquarters in Palo Alto. The event marked a milestone in Tesla’s history, with the company moving into the iconic former Hewlett Packard headquarters in Stanford Research Park, a site often attributed to the birthplace of Silicon Valley.
Beyond the new Engineering HQ announcement, the event served as a celebration of Tesla’s longstanding commitment to California and the state’s significance to the company’s operations and culture. During his remarks, CEO Elon Musk shared that the company now had over 48,000 employees statewide, including 30,000 located in Fremont, adding that the company’s Fremont factory had the highest output of any auto plant in North America.
2022 marked Tesla’s 20th year operating in the state. Over the years, the company has grown into an increasingly important economic multiplier for Fremont, the Bay Area, and California at large. Here are some numbers that help put this in perspective:
- Over 80,000 Tesla-supported jobs statewide, including 43,000 from $1.6 billion in expenditures with California suppliers.
- Over $400M in state and local taxes in 2021
- Over $16.6 billion in annual economic activity, equivalent to $44.4 million injected into California's economy each day.
- For every 100 direct Tesla jobs, 50 more were supported in the supply chain and 68 by follow-on consumer activity.
- GDP contributions to the CA have grown 3x overall statewide GDP growth.

In other Tesla news, on February 23, Tesla hosted 200 students from Hopkins Middle School to Introduce a Girl to Engineering Day (IGED). The event is a national collaboration between green economy workforce non-profit Envirolution and Tesla, dedicated to inspiring and encouraging middle school girls to consider a career in engineering. The event included a behind-the-scenes tour of Tesla’s facilities, hands-on activities, and hearing from women leaders at the company about the work they do and how they got there.

Fremont is home to more cleantech jobs and companies than any city in the country, ranging from electric vehicles to microgrids to solar equipment to clean hydrogen. One of Fremont’s up and coming cleantech startups is ElectricFish, whose 3502 power stations provide scalable, decentralized energy storage and “extreme” fast charging for vehicle fleets. A startup cohort member of LACI, ProspectSV, and Clean Tech Open, ElectricFish has already deployed its technology in multiple field settings with excellent results and is scaling into a larger Fremont facility for R&D and pilot manufacturing.
