Over the last five years, Fremont's life science sector has grown from 115 to over 150 firms. Fremont is a hub for life-changing innovation and scaling biomed operations, which you can read more about on our refreshed Life Sciences webpage. To better tell our story, Economic Development has partnered with industry association Biocom California to host a Spotlight on Fremont event on Wednesday, December 7 at 10am at the City’s new Downtown Event Center. Come learn why the industry is booming in Fremont, initiatives to recruit local talent, commercial real estate investment opportunities, and how companies in Fremont are contributing to the future of healthcare.
The event is open to all and registration is FREE regardless of Biocom California membership.
Biocom California released their latest Life Science Economic Impact Report, covering key economic, demographic, and industry performance data and analysis across the state. Statewide analysis shows that life science reached record investment numbers, garnering $22 billion in VC, and a 5.8% increase in life science jobs. The EIR also breaks down the numbers by region and County, highlighting the Bay Area's robust workforce representing 4.2 million life science jobs and the region's strength in biotechnology and R&D.

In August, the Biden-Harris Administration passed the CHIPS and Science Act of 2022, to fulfill semiconductor research, development, manufacturing, and workforce development to boost semiconductor manufacturing in the United States and position the nation as a leader in the industry.
Fremont has a long-standing history in the chips industry and is one of the few remaining cities in Silicon Valley that still have strong ties to the region’s silicon legacy. Today, the City is home to several well-known semiconductor companies, including Lam Research, Seagate, Mattson Technology, and soon-to-be Fremont-based Applied Materials, which will benefit from the bill and will invest nearly $2 billion to develop next-generation semiconductor manufacturing equipment.
To learn more about how Fremont is at the forefront of domestic manufacturing and how the CHIPS Act is already impacting Fremont-based companies, please visit the Think Silicon Valley blog.

Established in 2013 by the California Governor's Office of Business and Economic Development, the California Competes Tax Credit (CalCompetes) attracts and retains companies in California with $120 million in grants allocated for the 2022-23 fiscal year, fostering innovation and well-paying quality jobs across the state. LAM Research, headquartered in Fremont, has been awarded $18.8 million to help expand their Fremont and Livermore locations to research, develop, and manufacture equipment with the goal of dramatically increasing domestic production of critical semiconductors and microchip manufacturing equipment. This expansion will spur 560 new jobs and represents a $750 million investment between both locations.

The trucking industry serves as a backbone to our modern economy. According to the American Trucking Association, 72% of all freight transported in the US in 2021 was hauled by trucks, equating to 10.93 billion tons in that year alone. As significant the trucking industry is to our regional and global supply chains, the industry faces a shortage of drivers, higher gas prices, and the continued safety challenges for its workforce and fleets. Autonomous trucking technology company Plus.ai, whose R&D facility is located in Fremont, meets these challenges by making trucking even safer, more fuel-efficient, and more comfortable for drivers. City staff had the opportunity to meet with Plus' Vehicle Operations team to learn about Plus' technology, their latest deployment of their automation product suite PlusDrive, and see the outfitted trucks firsthand. Plus.ai's recent decision to locate and expand in Fremont underscores the City’s strength in offering the desired building typologies, zoning, and affordability of flex/R&D spaces that allow companies like Plus.ai to develop and commercialize their technologies.
