Following the success of Fremont’s Earn & Learn program, Ohlone College has partnered with Tesla to launch the company’s Manufacturing Development Program (MDP) in Fremont. Under the MDP, students who sign up will be onboarded by Tesla and then enrolled at Ohlone College in the Smart Manufacturing Technology (SMTech) program, where they will receive a certificate of achievement in SMTech that is condensed from two semesters into 10 weeks of intensive instruction.
With the Fremont MDP program, Tesla is not only covering the cost of tuition but also paying hourly wages for students while they undergo instruction. Upon completion, program graduates will be offered full-time employment at Tesla with benefits and stock options. The first cohort of 15 students is already underway and will complete the program on December 9th.
As if that were not enough, this week Ohlone College and Fremont Economic Development also launched their third cohort of their banner workforce development program, Fremont Earn & Learn. Partnering with Bloom Energy, a cohort of 15 students will receive 24 hours of virtual instruction in the fundamentals of advanced manufacturing, while also working full-time at Bloom Energy.
Program curriculum—which includes fundamentals of Industry 4.0, Material Handling, Blueprint Reading, Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing, and Safety in Industry, has been developed in partnership with Bloom Energy and an industry advisory group and will supplement on-the-job training provided by the company. Reflecting Fremont’s diversity, this cohort will include people of different ages, cultures, and backgrounds, including refugees and dislocated workers from the hospitality industry.
If you are an employer interested in participating in a future cohort, please reach out to Dr. Rose-Margaret Itua at ritua@ohlone.edu or contact our office.

The ED team with Biolytic Senior VP of Marketing Jim Demmitt (center) and Sales Manager Edsel Elizalde (second from left). Dr. Oligo Synthesizer on far left.
The Economic Development team recently had the opportunity to visit Biolytic Lab Performance, Inc., a Fremont biotech company that specializes in end-to-end oligonucleotide synthesis solutions. The aptly named Dr. Oligo Synthesizer is a compact yet impressive machine that harnesses solid phase synthesis to create DNA and RNA, which biopharmaceutical companies use to run R&D trials or scale up their drug and vaccine development efficiently. The use of oligos can be seen far and wide in the life science realm, including applications in drug and vaccine development, genetic test kits, and diagnostic research. This technology, designed and manufacturing in Fremont, is critical to the production of mRNA vaccines, including for COVID-19.
James Demmitt, Senior VP of Marketing and whose father began the company out of his garage à la Silicon Valley, underscored a local supply chain as one of their greatest values and strengths. From the beginning, Biolytic leveraged the robust supply chain in Fremont and the surrounding region to manufacture Dr. Oligo synthesizers. Biolytic has doubled their employee base during the pandemic and have been able to keep intact the quality, reliability, and availability of their products. During the site visit, the ED team was thoroughly impressed at the capacity and versatility of these machines, standing at just a few feet tall and wide. Biolytic is just one of two companies in the US that produces a synthesizer of similar capacity. Biolytic Lab Performance, Inc. is a testament to Fremont's strong base of life science companies and ecosystem of suppliers that support biopharmaceutical development and biomedical innovation.

When Fremont established its Downtown Community Plan in 2018, it was little more than an ambitious pipe dream. Flash forward five years, and that bold vision is starting to gain traction.
A steady stream of projects in the development pipeline are slated to usher in new residences, offices, and contemporary retail spaces. In the past year alone, Downtown has welcomed the grand opening of the Downtown Event Center and $150M in private investment, with much more to come.
To get a sense of the scale of investment, as of this October, there are over 1,100 units in the Downtown area development pipeline, including 241 units under construction and 837 units under review. This includes a 209-unit project at Gateway Plaza and 314-unit mixed use project at the Fremont Hub that would also add over 28,000 SF of new commercial and amenity space. All told, the mixed-use projects in the pipeline will add tens of thousands of square feet of new retail space to attract new restaurants, shops, and services.
While the development pipeline is dynamic and not immune to macro economic cycles, one can be sure that Downtown will continue to evolve and grow over time. Here's a few projects that we're excited about:
- The Beacon, a recently completed, 275-unit mixed-use project that has begun initial leasing.
- Fremont Bank's new HQ, a 6-story, 34,905 SF under construction that was recognized as Silicon Valley's Best Small Office Project of 2022.
- MIG's under construction mixed-use project, which takes advantage of Fremont's federally-designated Opportunity Zone and will bring in 241 units and approx. 5,500 SF of retail.
Downtown Fremont is still in the early innings, and that's what makes it exciting. Over time, each new project that comes to fruition will add to building an urban core that can serve as a central gathering point for Fremont's nearly quarter million residents. In the meantime, new businesses continue to come to Downtown and the Downtown Event Center is hosting increasingly more events, including the Chamber's Downtown Street Eats series that just wrapped up a successful 2022. We encourage you to come see the progress for yourself and let us know your feedback!

On October 25, the City of Fremont and Fremont Chamber partnered in hosting a job fair for Tri-City area residents at the Fremont Downtown Event Center (DTEC), attracting over 100 jobseekers. Over 20 organizations in and around Fremont, including Bloom Energy, Fremont Bank, and our own Fremont Police Department spoke with attendees about current job openings and in return received dozens of resumes. The Downtown Event Center's central location and state-of-the-art facilities make it a great option for job fairs, conferences, and celebrations. Check out the amenities here and reserve a room for your own event!
