Fremont is known for landmarks like Mission Peak, our historic Niles District, and Mission San Jose, but did you know that Fremont is the nation’s epicenter of advanced battery development? In fact, Fremont is home to over 50 energy technology companies as well as more cleantech jobs than anywhere in the nation. The Silicon Valley Business Journal recently mentioned Fremont in an article covering Bay Area battery companies, stating “It’s clear from the funding tallies that the Bay Area has become a hub of battery innovation. That’s no accident, industry experts say. You don’t have to look any further than Fremont to understand a big part of the reason why.”
Companies like Enovix, EnerVenue, Our Next Energy, and Amprius have chosen Fremont because of the City’s unique building typology within Silicon Valley, supportive zoning, robust supply chain network, and skilled labor pool that allows for the fast growth of R&D teams and manufacturing operations. Visit the City's business website to learn more about Fremont’s battery manufacturing ecosystem.

Eleven Fremont companies representing the life sciences, battery and clean tech, automotive, and semiconductor industries opened their doors to students from FUSD, Mission Valley ROP, Ohlone College, and CSU East Bay. These companies included ALOM, Anaspec, Bloom Energy, Boehringer Ingelheim, Enovix, Evolve Manufacturing, Lam Research, Plus.ai, Seagate, Thermo Fisher, and Western Digital.
Over 200 students were guided through facility tours to see how concepts learned in the classroom are applied in various industries, and to experience what modern day careers in manufacturing and hardware engineering look like. Representatives from the California Manufacturers & Technology Association (CMTA) and Governor's Office of Business and Economic Development attended several of the tours to highlight Fremont's success as a statewide leader in attracting and promoting advanced industries.

City staff recently had the opportunity to visit Gomentum Station, an autonomous vehicle testing facility located in Concord. The 2,100 acre facility is the largest dedicated secure testing facility for connected and autonomous vehicle technology in the nation. Gomentum Station is a public-private partnership developed by the Contra Costa County Transportation Authority and run by AAA. In September, Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg visited Gomentum Station and highlighted the profound changes autonomous vehicles will bring to our transportation system in the near future and the vital role the Gomentum Station facilities play in bringing those changes to our roadways. The Bay Area is the center of autonomous vehicle innovation and several of the most cutting-edge companies have major R&D or manufacturing facilities in Fremont including Tesla, Pony.ai, Zoox, and Waymo. Gomentum Station plays a significant role in the robust regional autonomous vehicle environment by providing a best in the nation testing facility close by to companies located in Silicon Valley.

On September 9 & 10, the Mission San Jose district transformed into a colorful, pedestrian-friendly, vibrant commercial district. Ellsworth Street and Washington Boulevard brimmed with hundreds of people strolling through the makers market, enjoying live music and entertainment, grabbing food and drink at the beer and wine gardens, and activating the entire block into a lively atmosphere for all ages.
This had long been the vision of Fremont community leaders, City of Fremont, and The Better Block Foundation, who spent the last eight months organizing the Better Block Mission San Jose event. During that time, we collected over 130 survey responses to gather ideas of what the local community want in their Mission San Jose district. A community leadership team was formed, who met weekly throughout the summer to recruit market vendors, performances, and volunteers. In the week leading up to the event, during a historic Bay Area heat wave, dozens of volunteers showed up to paint, build, and bring the community's vision to life on Ellsworth St. and Washington Blvd.
We want to thank The Better Block Foundation, the community leadership team, and the dozens of volunteers who ensured a successful event for the community to enjoy.
Visit the webpage for more background and to provide feedback about Better Block Mission San Jose. Stay tuned for a report produced by The Better Block Foundation detailing the outcomes of the event; it will be posted on this webpage once completed.

Silicon Valley Business Journal recently named Fremont Bank’s new headquarters as a 2022 Structures honoree for Best Office Project (Small). This annual award honors the best commercial real estate projects, deals, and people in the region. Once completed in March 2023, the 34,000-square-foot Fremont Bank headquarters will take the title of Fremont’s tallest building and will feature a six-story outdoor social area with fireplaces and views of the Fremont hills. The new Fremont Bank building will punctuate the west entrance to Downtown and is part of the 110-acre Fremont Downtown Community Plan that outlines the City Center District.
