Healthy Fontana Celebrates the Month of May with Mental Health, Biking, and Older Americans

Bicycle Giveaway and Other Prizes for Participating

During the month of May, Healthy Fontana will honor Mental Health Awareness Month and National Bike Month by providing engaging activities and resources for the whole community. Healthy Fontana, in partnership with Older Americans, invite you to celebrate with us by participating in the various activities and opportunities that will be offered. Below are a few of the programs and resources that will be offered throughout the month of May.

  1. Healthy Fontana will be calling on all community members to share what mental health means to them. We encourage you to submit entries in the form of a song, poem, painting, etc. for an opportunity to win a $50 Target e-gift card. More information is available on the Healthy Fontana website at Recreation.Fontana.org.
  2. National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) features the theme, “You Are Not Alone” which amplifies the important message that it is okay not to be okay. In Fontana, we can work together to raise awareness of mental health and mental illness by ensuring that anyone can get the appropriate support and care to live a healthy fulfilling life.
  3. On Saturday, May 15 - Healthy Fontana’s community-favorite Fontana Walks! program will also be Fontana Rides! in honor of Bike Month. Thanks to a generous donation from Walmart, Healthy Fontana will be giving away a youth and adult bike paired with a bicycle repair kit to two (2) lucky winners who participate in the various activities in May.
  4. Biking is not only great for our physical health, but it also provides great rewards for our mental health: “Cycling has been shown to be one of the most effective activities for the head and heart.” To participate, walk or ride any time on May 15.
    • Take pictures and/or video and email to healthy@fontana.org for a chance at a $50 Target e-gift card. Submitting steps through fontanawalks.org will gain another entry to a $50 Target e-gift card. Healthy Fontana also recognizes the importance of bike safety and will be giving away a limited number of FREE bike helmets to the community for those who complete a short bicycle safety quiz.

Also, this month we join The Administration for Community Living in celebrating Older Americans Month. This year's theme, "Communities of Strength," emphasizes the opportunities to stay connected and engaged to build a strong community. Be sure to reach out to the older Americans in your life this month and engage them in healthy activities all month long. The Fontana Community Senior Center offers various resources, activities, and programs for our senior community. For more information, visit Seniors.Fontana.org or call (909) 854-5151.

Healthy Fontana is a program of the City of Fontana’s Community Services Department whose mission is to create greater awareness of health in the community and seeks to inspire residents to make impactful changes to their lifestyle to help everyone live long and healthy lives.
