Cypress Fire Suspect Arrested

Mondragon, Luis

On November 1, 2020 at approximately 1:35pm dispatch received numerous calls regarding a brush fire in the hills south of Citrus Ave and Jurupa Ave.  As officers and fire personnel were responding to the area, the fire grew and quickly started burning acres of land.  More callers reported the fire was started near Jurupa Hills Regional Park.  Multiple callers reported seeing a subject near the fire and possibly the subject who started it.  The male subject was standing on a boulder in the hills and was later identified as Luis Mondragon (34).  Mondragon along with a hiker had to be rescued by San Bernardino County helicopter, 40K, from the fire.

Within two hours the fire had burned more than 75 acres and was threatening to jump Sierra Ave to the east due to the winds.  Fontana Police Officers started evacuations for the homes southeast of Sierra Ave and Jurupa Ave as the fire grew and threatened the homes.  Fire personnel were able to gain control of the fire and the evacuations were lifted at approximately 6:00pm.  Southbound lanes of Sierra Ave, south of Jurupa Ave, remained closed as fire personnel continued to work throughout the night into the morning and arson investigators examined at the area.

The fire burned approximately 130 acres of land and at one point threatened 130 homes.  Fontana Police Department worked in conjunction with San Bernardino County Fire personnel, arson investigators and other agencies.  After further investigation, Mondragon was arrested for PC 452(b) – unlawfully causing a fire that causes inhabited structure or inhabited land to burn.  Mondragon was booked in at WVDC.
