Fontana Celebrates National Community Planning Month with Activities throughout October

National Community Planning Month

Planning Month Proclamation

Fontana, Calif. - The City of Fontana is celebrating National Community Planning Month to raise awareness of the role Community Planners play in developing a city. The Mayor and City Council proclaimed October as National Planning Month at the September 24, 2019 meeting. Join the Planning staff throughout the month of October on the City's social media accounts for fun facts, staff videos and upcoming announcements.

The American Planning Association holds National Community Planning Month in October every year as a time to celebrate the role that planning plays in creating safe communities. The campaign aims to highlight how planning plays a vital role in a person's day-to-day activities. From the type of house a resident lives in to the route an employee takes to work, the impact of planning is reflected daily. This year's theme is Planning for Infrastructure that Benefits All to recognize how well-planned infrastructure projects including roadways, transportation systems, housing, and parks strengthen communities, boost the economy and promote equitable development.

As part of the campaign, City Planners are working with local schools to invite students to City Hall during the month to learn about the role planners play in shaping communities.

"October is an exciting month for Planning staff, because we look forward to sharing our passion for what we do with the community," shares Planning Manager Orlando Hernandez. "It's a great opportunity for students looking to get into a field where you can make a difference in the community."

The community is also invited to attend the Planning Commission meetings taking place on Tuesdays, October 1 and 15 at 6:00 p.m. to learn what it takes to get proposed projects to construction. The Planning Commission serves as the advisory board and decision-making body for many planning and development proposals. Members ensure the City's general plan is adhered to so that each project meets the needs of a growing city and provides a greater quality of life for current and future residents. All Planning Commission meetings take place inside the City Council Chambers.
