Fontana, Calif. - What is community planning and why is it important? Well, those are the questions that the City of Fontana Planning Division strives to educate residents on during National Community Planning Month. Join the Planning staff throughout the month of October on the City's social media accounts and in-person for numerous interactive activities to bring awareness to the role Community Planning plays in developing a city.

At the September 25 council meeting, the month of October was proclaimed National Community Planning Month. "Planning touches every aspect of communities. Everything you see, especially in the building environment, planning has something to do with it," explains Planning Manager Orlando Hernandez.

Activities will be posted on the City's social media accounts (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and Nextdoor). The activities include:

  • A Facebook Live event on Wednesday, October 3 to answer questions about room additions and garage conversions
  • Videos introducing Planning staff who will discuss upcoming projects, downtown improvements and more
  • Planning-related fun facts and puzzles
  • Great Places in Fontana "scavenger hunt" photo contest where once a week a clue will highlight a specific place in Fontana. Participants are encouraged to take a photo of the location and post to the City's Facebook page. The best photos will be recognized on the City's social media accounts

In-person events include a display at the library, the Fontana Planning Academy and a documentary. The Planning staff have selected approximately 40 planning-related books that readers of all ages will enjoy. The display is set up inside the Lewis Library and Technology Center located at 8437 Sierra Avenue.

Fontana's first-ever Planning Academy is currently underway. Residents have the opportunity to meet with planning professionals to learn more about the field.

During Healthy Fontana's Let's Move on the Trail event on Saturday, October 13, 2018, attendees are invited to visit the Steelworkers' Auditorium at 10:30 a.m. to view the planning documentary, "Urbanized."
