Code Compliance Inspector Helping Property Owners Keep Fontana Beautiful

Employee Spotlight
Efrain Gonzales, City of Fontana Code Compliance Inspector

Fontana, Calif.- The City of Fontana Code Compliance Unit is here to help, just ask Inspector Efrain Gonzalez. He has dedicated the past 12 years as a Code Compliance Inspector to work with property owners to keep Fontana beautiful. When it comes to enhancing the appearance of neighborhoods, businesses, preventing blight, protecting property and increasing economic conditions, Efrain and his team of inspectors are out in the field every day to maintain a high quality of life for the community.

"I enjoy working with property owners to bring their properties into compliance," says Code Inspector Efrain Gonzalez. "It's very rewarding when they say thank you."

But even when the public doesn't say thank you, this proud father of three finds the passion to keep going by helping those who need it the most. His most memorable case was a large family living in substandard conditions. The family, consisting of parents and their eight children (from infant to 12 years old), needed to be relocated based on the their hazardous living conditions. "This family needed assistance but did not recognize it or did not have the means to make a change," states Gonzalez. "Being able to help makes me proud to do what we do." Efrain was able to get them assistance from the state and into a better living situation.

A typical day out in the field includes a schedule of inspections, meeting new people and supporting police officers and other city departments during calls for code violations. Efrain approaches his role as an opportunity to educate the public about the importance of correcting code violations for the overall health of the community.

Although Code Inspectors only respond to complaints from residents, Efrain understands that the public may not always greet him with open arms. However, he follows the golden rule and advises others to "treat the public as you would want to be treated." The Code Compliance Unit is willing to work with property owners to obtain voluntary compliance.

Before joining the City of Fontana, Efrain held a similar position with the City of El Monte, and was a Police Officer for the City of Pasadena. His wife also works in law enforcement.

Outside of work, you can find Efrain on family bike rides around the city. He is an avid collector of 70s and 80s BMX bicycles and belongs to a website with other individuals throughout the world that share the same hobby. You also may catch him on the hunt for bicycle parts at yard sales and thrift stores.

Something most of his coworkers don't know about Efrain is that he helped with the making of Robocop 3 by shipping the armor used in the movie to the filming locations.

Efrain was selected as June's Employee Spotlight recipient based on nominations from his coworkers who describe him as a very dedicated individual making a difference in the community. He is very thankful for the recognition. "I made the right choice joining Fontana almost 12 years ago and I've never looked back."
