Fontana, Calif.-  City of Fontana Public Works Department Director, Chuck Hays, recognized Christopher Garcia, Shawn Matejcek and Jose Orozco as Public Works' Employees of the Year at the Tuesday, March 27, 2018 council meeting.

Every year, the Public Works Department selects one employee from each Division (Operations, Support Services and Parks and Landscape) for the Employee of the Year award based on their accomplishments during the previous year. The recipients are:

Chris' career began with Public Works in July 2013 as a Maintenance Services Worker. He is currently the Pump Maintenance Assistant, where he performs a variety of duties such as the installation, maintenance and repair of equipment used in the City's sewer pump stations. "I want to congratulate you on being selected as the Operations Division Employee of the year and applaud you for your efforts," expresses Chuck Hays. Outside of work, Chris helps foster children and visits local hospitals to donate socks and coats to those in need.

Shawn Matejcek - Support Services Division:

Shawn was hired in July 2014 as a Project Coordinator for the Public Works Department. He was involved with several remodeling projects at locations including the Miller Center, Jack Bulik Center, East Annex and the Emergency Operations Center within the Police Department building. Shawn also oversees Fontana's energy conservation efforts, and is the liaison for the San Bernardino Regional Energy Partnership. "Thank you for helping us construct several projects and saving us thousands of dollars in energy costs. For these reasons, the Support Services Division has selected you as Employee of the Year," states Chuck Hays.

Jose Orozco - Parks and Landscape Division:

Jose began with the Public Works Department in September 2001. As a Park Maintenance Technician, Jose is responsible for the City's central irrigation control system and performs field-based upgrades, troubleshooting and maintenance. He is the "go-to" guy for irrigation controller problems not only for the City, but for Factory Representatives as well. According to Chuck Hays, "Jose's professional approach toward his job and his desire to project a positive image of the City make him a valuable employee and a deserving recipient."
