Fontana, Calif.- Walking over to the Metrolink Station and OmniTrans Transfer Center in Fontana is now easier thanks to the completion of new sidewalks on Sierra Avenue and Juniper Avenue. The City of Fontana Engineering Department is excited to announce that the work to install sidewalks, curbs and gutters to improve connectivity for pedestrians in the area is now complete.

The brand-new sidewalks on Sierra Avenue and Juniper Avenue bookend the Metrolink Station. Additional improvements will occur in the coming weeks to include pedestrian crossing gates that activate similar to the vehicular traffic gates to prevent pedestrians from crossing when the trains are coming.

"The new sidewalks will improve pedestrian access to our downtown area, especially for our Senior Housing and Senior Community in the immediate vicinity," stated City of Fontana Engineer Noel Castillo. "We appreciate your patience as we continue with the rest of the improvements."

The City of Fontana was awarded two $750,000 grants from the Transportation Development Act for the Metrolink At-Grade Crossing Pedestrian Improvement Project. The project included new sidewalks, curb and gutters at the crossings, widening Sierra Avenue and the installation of pedestrian crossing gates and bike lane signage. The work began in October 2017 and is expected to be complete by February 2018.
