New Year, New You with Healthy Fontana Weight Loss Challenge


Fontana Walks Weight Loss Challenge

Fontana, Calif.- Jump start the New Year in a healthy fashion by joining the next Fontana Walks community walk and participating in a weight loss challenge held on Saturday, January 13, 2018 at Fontana Park located at 15556 Summit Avenue at 8:00 a.m. The Weight Loss Challenge will begin on January 13th and continue through July challenging participants to lose 10% of their body weight. 

Fontana Walks launched in August 2017 and is a yearlong program that encourages participants to be physically active on a daily basis for overall health. Since its launch, Fontana Walks has registered over 500 participants who have logged over 1 billion steps to date. The goal by the end of the program is to walk 2 billion steps. 

January will also kick off the program's weight loss challenge. Weight loss can have a significant impact on one’s health by lowering cholesterol, decreasing blood pressure, helping to control diabetes, and improving sleep apnea. A 5-10% weight loss can also lessen one’s chance of having a heart attack or stroke.

Concurrent with the community walk, the weight loss challenge will give participants seven months to reach their goal. Fontana Walks wants to encourage healthy weight loss with each participant so a monthly target goal will be established based on their starting weight. During the final weigh-in, participants who have met their goal(s) will be placed in a raffle to win a grand prize including gift cards to local businesses.

Round 1 concludes on February 17th; goal: 2% weight loss
Round 2 concludes on March 17th; goal: 4% cumulative weight loss
Round 3 concludes on April 21st; goal: 6% cumulative weight loss
Round 4 concludes on May 19th; goal: 8% cumulative weight loss
Round 5 conclude June 16th; goal: 10% cumulative weight loss (*please note that participants must reach this specific goal in order to be eligible for round 6)
Round 6 concludes July 21st; goal: maintain 10% weight loss

Participants will have one week to record their initial weigh- in with Healthy Fontana staff starting on January 13th (at the community walk or at the Fontana Community Senior Center between 8:00 am-12:00 pm). Individuals that cannot attend the initial weigh- in on January 13th at either location can contact the Healthy Fontana office at (909_ 349-6952 to schedule a weigh-in date and time At each round, participants who have met their goal will receive promotional items of encouragement.

The Fontana Walks community walk scheduled for January 13, 2018 is the sixth community walk event since the program launched in August 2017.  You still have time to register for the program and contribute to the community goal of walking 2 billion steps.
