Fontana, Calif. - The City of Fontana Planning Division welcomed students from Fontana Middle School on Thursday, September 21, 2017 to introduce them to a career in city planning in advance of National Community Planning Month celebrated in October.

Over 100 students gathered for a presentation about the vital role the Planning Division plays within the community, along with an interactive activity (pictured above). Students were selected to represent different city departments and consider a variety of issues such as environmental, zoning and safety before approving a building plan. "Planning touches all the development projects in the city, stated Planning Manager Orlando Hernandez. "Whether it's how the building looks, the layout of the parcels, the compatibility of the different uses; hopefully the students learned that everything that we do is for the betterment of the community."

Teachers were grateful for the opportunity to expose students to a different career path. "I'm excited because our kids will get to see a field they have probably never heard of," said Fontana Middle School Teacher and Planning Commissioner Daniel Quiroga."Everything that happens in the city goes through planning and there's lots of opportunities."

As part of the event, students will now submit a paragraph to the Planning Division staff describing information learned during the field trip, focusing on a "great place in Fontana" and why the particular place was chosen.

Staff will review the submissions and select 10 students to be recognized during the Tuesday, October 17, 2017 Planning Commission meeting. Additionally, selected students are invited to "Dinner with the Commissioners" prior to the meeting.
