Fontana, Calif.- The City of Fontana is offering children between the ages of 9 and 15 the opportunity to train to be a Junior Lifeguard this summer at the Don Day Community Pool. The Junior Lifeguard Training Program includes two sessions during the months of June and July to teach the fundamentals of water safety and protecting lives. Registration is now open.

The first session is June 5, 2017 – June 29, 2017 from 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. Monday through Thursday. The second session runs from July 3, 2017 – July 27, 2017 from 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. Monday through Thursday. To register, visit the Don Day Community Pool located at 14501 Live Oak Avenue or go online at www.FontanaCA.PerfectMind.com to sign up. The class is $100 per person and includes a free lunch.

The course is based on the American Red Cross Junior Lifeguarding program, which is designed to improve the participants’ water safety knowledge and lifeguard-related skills. Junior guards will also build a foundation for passing the Lifeguard Certification test and becoming a lifeguard in the future.

According to Community Services Aquatics Coordinator Stan Clark, lifeguarding is different from most jobs."Lifeguards protect lives. The Junior Lifeguard program has it all – fun while learning lifeguarding skills combined with positive character building experiences.”

The instructors are certified in lifeguarding and CPR, as well as swimming instruction. The course will include at least 16 hours of instruction, as well as time spent working alongside an on-duty lifeguard.

All participants must be able to swim 50 yards of freestyle, 50 yards of breaststroke and tread for one minute and must be between the ages of 9 and 15. Participants that have passed a level 4 class with the City of Fontana’s Learn-to-Swim program are also eligible.
