Caldor Fire Remembered
.
Remember the Caldor Fire of 2021. The town of Grizzly Flats was decimated by the wildfire blaze that lasted 68 days, burned more than 1,000 structures over 221,000 acres across El Dorado, Alpine and Amador Counties and injured 21 individuals. To date, the Caldor Fire was the largest wildfire in El Dorado County history, and the cause of the fire is still unknown. The residents of Grizzly Flats are still recovering from the disaster with no FEMA Individual Assistance despite promises from then President Biden. Local government solutions like the Title 25 building program provide opportunities for survivors but still require donations to cover costs, as the impacted residents have few resources. Many of the residents remaining in Grizzly Flats have banded together with sparse outside assistance to help them overcome the challenges of putting their lives back together. Residents recovering from the Caldor Fire still need help.

Glassy-Winged Sharpshooter

The glassy-winged sharpshooter is a large leafhopper, measuring about 12 millimeters (0.5 inches) in length. It is characterized by its dark brown to black coloration, with distinctive yellow eyes and transparent wings that have reddish veins. The upper parts of its head and back are speckled with ivory or yellowish spots, which help distinguish it from similar species. As an invasive species, the glassy-winged sharpshooter has devastated agricultural crops and local vegetation. In recent years the County of El Dorado has been working to eradicate the invasive insects but due to difficulties with property owners the species continues to thrive. There has been a large increase in the glassy-winged sharpshooter population numbers and the treatment area had spread significantly over the last couple of months. The populations are spreading farther north, west and south from El Dorado Hills. Sacramento County is now finding glassy-winged sharpshooters in Folsom just over the county line. Residents should be concerned about the spread of this invasive insect and work with El Dorado County Ag Department to eliminate them from private property and prevent the spread to other properties in the community.

RCD Tree Removal Services

The RCD can help public or private landowners get assistance with vegetation management and tree removal at no cost to the landowner. This could be helpful for residents recovering after a wildfire. RCD is a grassroots government organization that advises and assists individual landowners and public agencies in planning and implementation of conservation practices for the protection, restoration, or development of land, water, and related natural resources. The El Dorado County Resource Conservation District and Georgetown Divide Resource Conservation District are local, independent, non-enforcement, non-regulatory, self-governed districts organized under Division 9 of the Public Resource Code. Fire Safe Councils and residents are encouraged to reach out to RCD for assistance in creating defensible space and hazard tree removal.

Household Hazardous Waste Event

El Dorado County accepts certain household hazardous waste from residents. The Environmental Management Department provides information regarding what constitutes household hazardous waste, and the proper ways of disposing the waste. On August 29th, El Dorado County will host another household hazardous waste collection event by appointment only. To participate in the upcoming waste collection event, please contact the Environmental Management Department directly by phone at (530) 621-5300 or by email at hhw@edcgov.us to schedule an appointment.
