French Town Cemetery Event

.

On May 9th, 2026, the Sutter's Mill Parlor No. 336 - Native Daughters of the Golden West presented a new historical plaque dedicated to the three pioneer families (Gregory, Turnboo and Watkins) who purchased the one-acre French Town Cemetery land for $10 during the Gold Rush-era. The plaque was placed near the entrance to the cemetery to honor the legacy of the three pioneer families as people enter the grounds. The cemetery is currently maintained by the French Town Cemetery Association, with George Turnboo as the current president of the association and Larry Robinson as current caretaker.

The French Town Cemetery remains as the legacy of Frenchtown, which is a burial ground established during the Gold Rush-era with the interment of L. T. Waters as the first recorded burial in April of 1860. The French Town Cemetery is located on a hill west of the original mining camp off French Creek Road near the intersection with Old Frenchtown Road. The cemetery contains 181 graves that reflect the hardship of the early settlers and miners in El Dorado County. The French Creek area was originally settled by French and French Canadian prospectors in the 1840's and 1850's. Preservation efforts have focused on the French Town Cemetery, which benefits from county recognition as an active public resource and inclusion in county cemetery inventory. Despite no formal historic district designation, the French Town Cemetery continues to keep its cultural significance.

HWY 50 Association Logo

The Highway 50 Association hosted the 77th Annual Wagon Train from May 31st through June 6th, 2026, to embrace our cultural heritage by bringing local history back to life. In 1949, the first modern day Wagon Train was formed to remember the 100th anniversary of the California "Gold Rush". The Wagon Train travels west from Lake Tahoe to Placerville along Highway 50, following the "Roaring Road" pathway that wagons traveled entering California. The tradition honors the struggle that people endured to seek out a better life for their families and provides a modern way to experience how life was in El Dorado County when California became a state. The Highway 50 Association provides a Wagon Train gallery, events, membership and sponsorship information.
