New Hope For Grizzly Residents
.
.
El Dorado County and HomeAid Sacramento hosted an event celebrating the building of 12 homes for Caldor Fire survivors still without homes in Grizzly Flats. The event was well attended by residents, dignitaries and news media. During the presentation, residents and the contractors hired to build the homes met. Everyone involved was grateful for the Grizzly Flats Rebuild Program developed by the Planning Department.
The average cost of each Title 25 home is roughly $145,000, with costs being paid by HomeAid Sacramento and developer fees collected by El Dorado County that were intended for low-income housing. The Grizzly Flats Rebuild Program is a partnership between El Dorado County and HomeAid Sacramento to establish small homes for residents in Grizzly Flats that will help fulfill state requirements for low-income housing. The adjusted requirements for a Title 25 home helps to alleviate costs for rebuilding while still providing residents with a place they can be proud to call home. There still remains 13 families that want to participate in the Grizzly Flats Rebuild Program so additional $600,000 will need to be raised to be able to provide homes to all remaining Caldor Fire survivors without homes.

El Dorado Western Railroad
-
The El Dorado Western Railroad is an excursion railroad program that currently operates on El Dorado County rails between Placerville and Shingle Springs. The current existing structure of the Shingle Springs freight depot was built after a fire burned the station in 1896 and a scaled version of the El Dorado Station is located in the town of El Dorado. The El Dorado Western Railroad is the operational component of the El Dorado County Historical Railroad Park and provides train rides on historic Gang Cars which were used by railroad inspectors, officials, works and others. Train rides usually last 30 to 40 minutes from boarding location and back. Tickets for trains rides can be purchased online for the excursion trains. The El Dorado Western Railway Foundation is responsible for supporting and managing the rail operations in El Dorado County and assists in carrying out the mission to bring the living history of railroads to El Dorado County residents.
Railroads have been part of El Dorado County history since the Gold Rush era. In 1853, the Sacramento Valley Railroad started, reaching Folsom in 1856, Shingle Springs in 1865 and Placerville in 1888. The Southern Pacific Railroad operated hauling passengers, lumber, fruit, butter and other industry related products to Sacramento until 1986. El Dorado County would benefit tremendously from a return to using the rail lines to export commercial and industrial goods to Sacramento, and the rest of the country. The El Dorado County Historical Museum and volunteers work with the Sacramento-Placerville Transportation Corridor JPA (SPTC-JPA) to maintain the rail lines as part of a joint effort to provide greater access across our region.
