Peace Officers Memorial Day

Today, May 15th, is Peace Officers Memorial Day. The day pays tribute to the local, state and federal peace officers who have died or been disabled in the line of duty. The holiday was created on October 1, 1961, when Congress authorized President John F. Kennedy to sign the bill into law on October 1, 1962. We remember our own Peace Officers in El Dorado County on this day as a memorial to their service to our community. Deputy Brian "Ish" Ishmael is one of those Peace Officers that was taken from us too early and died in the line of duty. The Board of Supervisors were so moved by Deputy Ishmael's bravery, that they've also dedicated October 23rd in honor of Deputy Ishmael's memory.

On May 12th, President Trump issued a proclamation honoring Peace Officers Memorial Day to honor brave officers who serve on the front lines to protect our families, safeguard our communities, and shoulder the burden of law enforcement so society can remain peaceful. President Trump's proclamation appropriately honors our heroes in law enforcement. Let us also honor our heroes in law enforcement by celebrating Peace Officers Memorial Day each year with a moment of silence at 3pm on May 15th and fly flags at half-staff.

Turnboo in DC

.

Supervisor Turnboo and Supervisor Parlin recently traveled to Washington D.C. with staff from the El Dorado Water Agency as part of a California delegation that lobbied for issues that matter to El Dorado County. Supervisor Turnboo participated in several wildfire and forest management related meetings, including meetings with congressional members and agency staff. In these meetings, Supervisor Turnboo advocated for better forest management through private sector timber harvesting and working through regulations that have tipped the balance unfairly in favor of environmental obstructionism.

Supervisor Turnboo and Supervisor Veerkamp recently met with the new Eldorado National Forest Supervisor Dave Fournier. The meeting helped both sides to better understand what the public is telling them, and how USFS and El Dorado County can better manage the forests and public concerns. The meeting went well and agreed to further collaboration moving forward. By working with federal agencies like the US Forest Service, we can return to private sector timber harvesting and get important forest management projects completed that might otherwise be unfunded or discontinued.

Title 25 Cover Image

The first small home under the Title 25 program will begin construction this month. On May 23rd, at 10am in Grizzly Flats, Caldor Fire survivor and Veteran Mac MacNeil will be hosting an event celebrating the rebuilding of his home. Mac has been a vocal representative for survivors of the Caldor Fire. Co-hosting the event will be the project management organization Non-profit Construction Corporation (NPC). Volunteers and organizations partnered with NPC will be on-site working to build the small home.

The first small home under the Title 25 program represents a significant milestone on the road to recovery for Caldor Fire survivors in Grizzly Flats. Due to insurance coverage and costs, several residents have been unable to rebuild homes after the Caldor Fire tore through Grizzly Flats. The first small home under the Title 25 program provides hope for those qualifying residents who still want to rebuild their home. Special thanks to Planning and Building Director Karen Garner for working diligently with the residents to ensure the Title 25 program is adequate; to NPC for working with charities and agencies to assist building Title 25 program projects, and to Grizzly Flats residents who support Caldor Fire survivors rebuilding small homes.

Outdoor Burning Restrictions

-

El Dorado County Seal

Cal-Fire permits are required for ANY size burn pile starting this month of May 2025. The El Dorado County Air Quality Management District (AQMD) is responsible for determining "burn days" and "no burn days" in our region. AQMD recommends reviewing their Outdoor Burn Day Status website to determine appropriate days to burn yard waste. Outdoor burning is intended only for vegetation originating on the property where it is being burned. For large burn piles, exceeding 4 feet by 4 feet, a free Burn Permit from AQMD is required. Outdoor burning is an efficient alternative to hauling green waste to a disposal location and can be an important compliment to property clean-up efforts. Ensure that when you do decide to burn outdoors, that you are abiding by all state and local regulations for your own safety and the safety of the surrounding community.

There are no restrictions for burning in fireplaces, woodstoves, and pellet stoves within El Dorado County, but burn barrels are prohibited.
