Sand Fire Remembered
-
.
It has been a decade since the Sand Fire threatened El Dorado and Amador counties. On July 25, 2014, the Sand Fire began east of Highway 49 near Sand Ridge Road and burned 4,240 acres of land for eight days. During the wildfire there were 47 structures that were destroyed with two fire personnel and civilians injured. We remember the importance of defensible space, hardening homes, and proper evacuation preparations, as we reflect on the damage caused by the Sand Fire of 2014. Many of the lessons learned from wildfires since that time have brought about new strategies and policies to help ensure a safer community with stronger response to wildfire.
El Dorado County has been developing tools to better empower everyone to prevent wildfire and respond appropriately when it occurs. The Office of Wildfire Preparedness and Resilience (OWPR) and EDC Fire Safe Council have programs in place to assist residents with wildfire prevention. El Dorado Sheriff's Office (EDSO) maintains an alerting platform at Ready.EDSO.org to notify residents of emergencies. Evacuation zones and routes are provided through PerimeterMap.com to assist residents during emergencies. Wildfires in our region may be tracked using App.WatchDuty.org. CAL-FIRE provides updates about ongoing wildfire response operations at Fire.CA.gov/incidents. We recommend residents familiarize themselves with these tools to be best prepared for wildfires in El Dorado County.

CAL-FIRE Capital City Tanker Base
-
-
Starting in 2008, CAL-FIRE began the Capital City Tanker Base utilizing Sacramento McClellan Airport as a wildfire air-attack base. The base is home to a number of wildfire air-attack aircraft, such as Grumman S-2T, Sikorsky S-70i and C-130 Hercules, maintained and operated by a CAL-FIRE Amador-El Dorado Unit (CALFIRE AEU) on-site crew at all times. The CAL-FIRE base provides refilling stations for aircraft and a central location in northern California to fly missions to anywhere in our State. The heroes of the CAL-FIRE aviation program are on-call day and night to ensure their fleet of more than sixty aircraft can reach the most remote locations in approximately 20 minutes, with a response goal of 10 acres or less for wildfire spread. Our thoughts and prayers are with all firefighters as they continue to put their lives at risk to preserve ours.
