Moccasin and Pay Fires

-

El Dorado County experienced two wildfires within the same week, starting with the Moccasin Fire on July 2nd in Oak Hill, and the Pay Fire on July 6th near the Placerville Airport. The response was immediate as CAL FIRE began rerouting aircraft to respond to the Moccasin Fire, and numerous ground crews began attacking the fire. As the first responders gained control of the Moccasin Fire on July 6th, the Pay Fire ignited and began burning near the Placerville Airport. EDSO Echo 1 was the first aircraft on the scene assisting ground crews who were responding to the fire. By July 8th, the fire crews had stopped forward progress on the Pay Fire and began mopping up. The Moccasin Fire and Pay Fire torched 51 acres and 77 acres each. The inter-agency response crews included U.S. Forest Service, Tribal Fire, CAL FIRE, El Dorado County Fire Protection District and El Dorado County Sheriff’s Office, as well as numerous others, like the Food Bank of El Dorado County, who provided evacuation resources and assistance. El Dorado County provided tools such as PerimeterMap.com and Ready.EDSO.org to help inform residents as the wildfire incidents progressed. Many residents were able to stay informed on their mobile devices using the Watch Duty app, which maps out wildfires, evacuation zones, evacuation routes and provides informational updates. These wildfires are a reminder that hot and dry conditions provide opportunities for wildfires to be ignited, and vigilance is required to be prepared.

Fire Risk Reduction Community

-

OWPR Logo

The California Board of Forestry and Fire Protection has added El Dorado County to the Fire Risk Reduction Community List, which highlights local agencies that meet best practices concerning local fire planning. The Office of Wildfire Preparedness and Resilience (OWPR) has been working on developing a strategy that has allowed El Dorado County to qualify for the list. To date, El Dorado County is one of seven counties that have received placement on the list. The benefits of being placed on the Fire Risk Reduction Community List are important, as they fit with the California Insurance Commissioner’s Safer from Wildfires initiative. Along with property owners creating defensible space and other specific fire prevention actions, the designation provides residents of unincorporated areas of El Dorado County an additional opportunity to receive discounts on homeowner insurance premiums. Homeowner insurance customers are encouraged to inquire about related discounts on insurance policies. The listing designation makes El Dorado County eligible for priority consideration on specific Wildfire Prevention grant opportunities.

"Placement on the Fire Risk Reduction List marks a significant accomplishment for El Dorado County and is a testament to the collaboration and dedication of our partner agencies and County departments, including staff from CAL FIRE, our local fire districts, the County’s Planning and Building Department, and our Sheriff’s Office of Emergency Services." - Tom Meyer, Program Manager (OWPR)

Buck's Bar Road Bridge Meeting

-

El Dorado County Seal

Buck's Bar Road Bridge in El Dorado County District 2 has been in need of an upgrade for decades. Department of Transportation (DOT) continues the ongoing effort to plan for a proper bridge replacement of the Buck's Bar Road Bridge. The bridge is currently a one-way-only bridge that requires traffic to stop and yield to oncoming traffic with limited viewing range of oncoming traffic. Over the decades, the concreted bridge has encountered numerous vehicle accidents and flooding from the river below. DOT is planning to present about the Buck's Bar Road Bridge at the Pioneer Park facilities at 6:30pm on July 16th. Residents who use the bridge are encouraged to attend to learn more about potential road work plans and detours.
