Wagon Train Rides Again
.
The Highway 50 Association hosted the 75th Annual Wagon Train from June 1–8, to embrace our cultural heritage by bringing local history back to life. In 1949, the first modern day Wagon Train was formed to remember the 100th anniversary of the California "Gold Rush". The Wagon Train travels west from Lake Tahoe to Placerville along Highway 50, following the "Roaring Road" pathway that wagons traveled entering California. The tradition honors the struggle that people endured to seek out a better life for their families and provides a modern way to experience how life was in El Dorado County when California became a state. The Highway 50 Association provides Wagon Train itinerary, gallery, events, membership and sponsorship information.

RCD Heavy Machine Demo
-
-
El Dorado County and Georgetown Divide Resource Conservation District (RCD) recently held a demonstration event for numerous heavy machines that are designed for managing our forest. Many of the heavy machine designs presented new strategies in vegetation management operations and focused on more efficient means of mastication. The grounds were properly prepared to create a safe environment for demonstrations and response crews were available in case of emergency. The event highlighted machine capabilities to provide new ideas for industry stakeholders.
One example of new heavy machine technology on display was presented by FAE USA and changes the way we think of forest management. The RCU55 and RCU75 are remote controlled tracked carriers that can shred branches, wood pieces, grass, shrubs, stumps and more, depending on the machine attachment. The key aspect is that the machine is smaller in size and remotely controlled, eliminating the need for an operator to sit on the machine and providing more agility with the smaller size. Eliminating the risk to operators by being controlled remotely, the RCU55 and RCU75 have low centers of mass, both of which allow for access to terrain that otherwise would need to be managed without machines. FAE USA is still developing the remotely controlled heavy machine equipment to become a more effective tool to use by forest management operations.

The event was hosted by friendly RCD staff along Placerville Drive. A number of tents and tables were set up to speak to industry representatives and to learn more about specific equipment. The RCD staff also provided refreshments and BBQ for the attendees. All attendees were briefed about safety and provided appropriate PPE to ensure safe attendance.

Community Action Council
-
The Community Action Council (CAC) is a Community Action Agency created by the federal government to combat poverty in designated areas. The focus of the CAC is to address local needs by assisting individuals and families to help community members access opportunities and achieve self-sufficiency. The CAC works to bring local, state, federal and private sector resources to assist low-income individuals or families with the hope that they will acquire skills and knowledge to gain access to new opportunities and prosper economically.
The structure of the CAC consists of a tripartite board with individuals representing public officials, private sector leaders and low-income community members. The CAC membership is open to the public and new people are encouraged to join the public meetings listed on the CAC 2024 Meeting Calendar. The membership helps to create the Community Action Plan (CAP) that serves as a two-year roadmap for how to deliver Community Services Block Grant (CSBG) funded services. The purpose of the CAP is to identify and assess poverty related needs and resources available to the community through a detailed plan, goals, and priorities for delivering services. New members and attendees are always welcome.
