I would like to thank Senator Marie Alvarado-Gil for coming to our county office to talk about insurance challenges in El Dorado County. Chief Cordero (EDC Fire Protection District) highlighted the prohibitive cost of insuring fire stations and critical equipment, Caleb Sandford (Executive Director, El Dorado Community Health Center) spoke about the challenge of insuring his brand new facility that provides comprehensive health care to our most vulnerable residents, we spoke about commercial rates, and Laurie Cordero (Atwood Insurance) spoke about the lack of viable insurance products for homeowners. I would also like to thank Debra Miller, El Dorado County Board of Realtors, for providing important insights from our real estate professionals.
I continue to be impressed by the Senator's responsiveness to the issues and needs of our rural residents. Also, as a member of the Senate Committee on Insurance, she is deeply knowledgeable about these challenges and committed to exploring solutions. Granted, this is not an easy issue with a simple fix, but we all walked away confident that Senator Alvarado-Gil will be a staunch advocate and champion for change in Sacramento.
What a celebration! Medic Unit 49 was put back into service thanks to a creative, collaborative partnership between El Dorado County Fire and the Diamond Springs-El Dorado Fire Protection District! County Fire will be providing the staffing for the ambulance which will be housed in the Diamond Springs Fire Station in coordination with the West Slope JPA who manages our ambulance service. Additionally, there is tuition available for new paramedics through the El Dorado Community Foundation, all in response to our community's need and desire to once again have an ambulance in service to Diamond Springs. What an incredible community partnership! (Many thanks to Supervisor Parlin for joining me at this important celebration).
EDC SCHOOL BOARDS ASSOCIATION ANNUAL AWARDS DINNER at Cold Springs Country Club
It was a joy to join the El Dorado County Youth Commission as they were recognized for their contribution to our County at this annual awards dinner. The purpose of the Youth Commission is to advise the Board of Supervisors on issues relating to children and youth in the community while developing ways to address those needs.
The Youth Commission operates under the jurisdiction of the Board of Supervisors and the El Dorado County Office of Education, and I am proud to be the BOS liaison to the Youth Commission.
(Additional award recipients from District 3 are highlighted in the sidebar above)
It was a privilege to sit down and have a rich conversation with four teens from Hands4Hope - Youth Making a Difference. We talked about the Human Rights Commission, about issues they and their peers are facing, what their hopes are for our County and our world, and what we can do to bring the voice of our youth into the broader context of our community.
There is a lot of work to be done here. That said, I remain excited and hopeful that we will be able to find new opportunities for shared understanding that will enable us to be kinder, more open to talking with each other in productive ways, and more accepting of our common humanity despite any differences. We all love this place we call home. Let's build on that common ground.
Thursday, April 6th from 4:30 - 6:00 p.m. in Conference Room D (Downstairs under the BOS Chambers)
County Offices - Building A at 330 Fair Lane in Placerville
I wanted to make sure that District 3 residents know about this opportunity to engage in the revisions to the Ranch Marketing / Winery Ordinance.
We reviewed the changes at a Public Workshop as well as at the Ag Commission and Planning Commission. Before the Planning Commission finishes their debate and this item goes to the Board of Supervisors, Karen and I want to hear your insights and thoughts on the proposed revisions.
This will be an informal listening session although I have asked our Ag Commissioner, LeeAnne Mila, to be available for any questions. I look forward to chatting.
