DOT Seeks Public Input on Road Closures During Holiday Weekends

WHAT:  Public meeting to discuss traffic control measures in the Lake Tahoe Basin during upcoming Fourth of July and Labor Day holidays.

In anticipation of traffic congestion during the upcoming Fourth of July and Labor Day holidays, El Dorado County Department of Transportation (EDC DOT) will present a traffic congestion circulation alternative that officially and temporarily closes portions of Sawmill Road at Highway 50 and North Upper Truckee at Highway 50.

WHEN:  Tuesday, June 18th, 6:00 PM

WHERE:  California Conservation Corps building,
1949 Apache Ave, South Lake Tahoe, CA 96150

WHO:  El Dorado County Department of Transportation director, Rafael Martinez
El Dorado County District V Supervisor, Sue Novasel

BACKGROUND:  EDC DOT has been working in collaboration with the California Highway Patrol, City of South Lake Tahoe, Caltrans, and the South Lake Tahoe Police Department to determine viable ways to alleviate excessive traffic congestion caused by mapping app directions and address safety issues on neighborhood roads as visitors leave the Tahoe Basin, particularly on holiday weekends.

Open House Held for Hwy 50/Pioneer Trail

On June 12, 2019, the El Dorado County Department of Transportation held an open house at the California Conservation Corps to present project alternatives for improving the intersection of Hwy 50 and Pioneer Trail in Meyers.
The event was attended by more than 35 people, including the Tahoe basin lieutenant from the El Dorado County Sheriff's Office and the Fire Chief of the Lake Valley Fire Protection District.  Attendees asked questions and engaged in discussions with DOT staff regarding options for improving the intersection, including a larger signalized intersection and a roundabout.  Both alternatives include features that will improve safety and efficiency for motorists, cyclists and pedestrians.
Twelve attendees left written comments.  66% of the comments supported the roundabout alternative, 17% supported the signal alternative or opposed the roundabout, and 17% stated no preference.  The public has another opportunity to provide input on this project's alternatives at the Board of Supervisors meeting in Placerville on August 6, 2019.  Since the project is located in Caltrans right of way along Hwy 50, Caltrans will make the final determination as to which project alternative is selected.  The public may contact Donaldo Palaroan at (530)573-7920 or donaldo.palaroan@edcgov.us for more information.
